I'd love an MX bike, YZ125 or an RM125 would be nice, something like 2005 or newer.

Love this YZ, would like to replicate it..saw it for sale a couple of years ago wish I saved more pics as haven't saw it since

Never been on a bike in my life....still dying to get one, was always thinking 125 but recently been watching a lot of vids ands the 250's seem like they got a bit more poke (obv) what you's think would be best? bike will only go as fast as you make it so should I just jump in the deep end and get a 250?

A decent 125 which wont need a re-build, tidy bike 2003 or newer will be around 1.5k-2k.

Depends really what you want to do with it , & are you talking 250 4 stroke or 250 2 stroke ? for a novice i wouldnt advise going 250 2 stroke you will end up hurting yourself there pretty agressive an can catch you out very quickly ! If its a 250 4 stroke then as long as your happy to take on the extra expense / maintanence required then you will be fine, to be honest there easyer to ride than a 125 2 stroke as the power delivery is very smooth... Ive had all varietys but still come back to the 125's there cheap to maintain fun to ride & if your not thinking of racing you wont need the small amount of extra grunt...

2stroke 125's , 1.5k would get you an 05 & 2k would see you on anything upto an 08..

If you want something smooth deffinatley go 4-stroke, 2 stroke are brash and MUCH harder to ride quick due be being on the clutch mostly. 4 Strokes you can just out it in gear pull the throttle and go. But the 4-stroke's are more expensive to maintain oil chanes and so on, and if you need a re build then they are more expensive too.

Well of course there are varying factors just like buying a car , You will get a nice clean yz / kx /sx / rm / cr, for that sort of money or look out for the Husky cr 125 or Tm 125 these can normaly be picked up for a bit less than the main 5 well known brands... If it were me id be looking for an 05 onwards yz 125 ! In my expereince these are the most reliable of the one twenty fives ...

best all rounder is a cr 125 far reliable than the yz kx rm is rubbish motor
as long as you maintain a cr and ride it right it will be reliable.
keep in mind there is hardly anyware to legaly use these no and the police will crush them if they catch you and also once seen round the area you will have every scroat trying to steel the thing

Best standard bike is the Tm without a doubt. Race tuned ohlins tallon wheels all from standard, and the best looking imo too.

If you like your 80s turbo cars for the way they deliver their power you will definitely be wanting a 2 stroke over a 4 stroke

Well I'd be wanting a 2 stroke, so that sounds like a 250 is ruled out tbh, a 125 will probably be way faster than I need as a novice...
I'll just be using it for fun at the weekends, no competing or track riding, would take it to a track once I get to grips and can ride the thing properly though.

Was looking at RM125's and YZ125's, would preffer something newish like a 2008/09
What are common upgrades people do to these? just about everyone i've saw for sale online the exhausts are always bashed to bits

Thanks for the advice

A 125 will be fine for you in that case , Everyone has there own opinions on Make/Model , in my experience go for a Yamaha (yz) , I know two full time mx mechanics an both of them say these are the least trouble some / best built & they also ride them, but like any thing if its not been looked after properly then your going to have problems... Unless you have a land owners permission you really shouldnt be looking to free ride its very much fround apon by anyone in the sport.. There are mx tracks dotted all round the country so with a bit of looking im sure you can find some were fairly local to get you started which will have marshals / 1st aiders, Most of them run in groups novice/inters/experts so you can ride with people of your own ability, I Travel all over the place ridding trying new tracks ! Once you get into the sport its hard not to love it

Upgrade parts, well the skys the limit really , Being honest the bike will be plenty fast enough for you to start with especially if your looking to get somthing made in the last 5 years or so , Id probably look to get the suspension Revalved/re-sprung to suit your weight , This isnt an essential but will make a hole lot of diffrence to the way the bike rides/handles for the better, Bike manufacturers have to make the standard kit suit everyone so its defo worth looking into as there are some big improvements to be had...

Get yourself on http://forums.mxtrax.co.uk/ if you havent already Theres loads of good info there along with a healthy forsale section (mx swopshop)

That's what I was thinking, I remember waiting in late 96 for the 97 bikes to come out so I could check out the honda's frame.

As for prices, new bikes are very expensive now, that has helped hold seconhand values as well, in 07 I sold my mint RM125 for around £1500, it seems it woul be worth about the same now......

10 years ago I used to sell brand new imported bikes, a new 125 was around £2300 then

Sweet, some good info to get me going there. Where i'd be keeping the bike it's in the country, across the road theres a big field where people take their off-roaders and also i'd recieve permission from the farm owner before tearing the field up (or breaking my legs) whichever comes first.
did wonder about suspension actually as I do a lot of downhill mtb and that's what you need to do for the full suspension bikes! so makes sense really
I'll get joined up onto that forum, joined a scottish one but it's a bit useless and also struggling to find any decent places to buy a bike from

any idea if KTM's are good?

http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-m...l-buy/89748509

Saw that one and it looks/sounds good.

thanks again

Sorry bud only just seen your last reply lol You may well have fixed yourself up with a bike by now ?

If your going to be using it around a field to start with i wouldnt worry about the suspension just get use to the bike & then once you start taking it to tracks it may be worth looking into...

Forsale wise i normaly just use mxtrax's or ebay , Try an get something with as fewer hours on it as possible there will be more chance its not worn out that way... Yer ktm are gd bikes if looked after the ktm 2strokes are probably the quickest out there , i just sold my 144 ktm

& although i loved it i wouldnt buy anouther there abit to fragile for my liking, ill be looking for anouther yam again soon...

Id say that one in the add was possibly alittle on the expensive side for an 04 id be wanting an 05-06 really for that money...

Hi Rossco jus noticed u'd replied also!

No I haven't got me a bike yet, still on the look out. Your old KTM looks great, I like the black/Orange combo. I think i'd go for a KTM/RM/YZ, for no perticular reason other than they look good IMO. Heard the Yam's are probably the better of the 3?

Hard to know what's a good bike and what's not, I'd guess a lot have just been abused, when I buy do they come with anything like a V5 kinda thing so I know it's not just stolen?

got a bike yet?

i sold my 06 yz125 recently and bought an 03 cr125 today

when buying a crosser all i can advise is buy from an address and see cars etc used, get a reciept stating name and address of seller

i got my cr today guy seemed genuine and sold it from his lockup that has 5 locks and his rmx250 in just down from his home and he delivered it on his trailer to my house after i gave him a deposit

doesnt mean its not nicked but is as good as i could do

you wont find many crossers for sale with original bill of sale

Not yet! I've been looking on Gumtree, probably not the best place to buy one right enough.

Yea I was thinking that may be the case, I guess you can only go with instinct and common sense.

how do you rate the CR over the YZ?

the yz was totally mint never raced or tampered as it came new std and the cr is a well used bike with some upgrades like pipe, reeds, airbox bit, fancy head, tuned shock and forks

the yz was faster and better power to be honest and a friend who has a modded rm125 said the same, the yz was really really good as it was

im not convinced that a louder pipe is more powerful or just sounds more powerful, yamaha certainly know how to put a bike together better than a random collection of go faster parts

i just like buying and playing then selling again so its all good

i want to start getting really slow balance point wheelies on the go, i can go thru every gear with its nose up from walking pace to top speed but cant do the really slow stuff,

seen some good vids

trouble is im more of a 'let the clutch do its own thing and ring its neck' kinda guy

from what i can see its best to standing start, dump the clutch and jump on as it flips up

but my cr is pretty big so i think ill had to get it out as see what i can do

Would be a cool trick to learn, think i'd prefer that kinda wheelie to a flat out one!

Either way, i'd probably end up with the bike ontop of me

need to get my finger out, think my first problem is deciding how much i'm going to spend on one, then I can start looking to see what's avail for my budget!
