Default 1.6 Focus knocking from top end

Went to look at a Focus last night as a run around for my son while his FRS is off the road
it was a 52 plate 1.6 Zetec up for £200
Bodywork was ok but the engine has a really loud knock which seems to be coming from the top end somewhere.
it drives ok and when under load is relatively quiet but when revved it rattles like a bag of nails.
thought about taking a chance and making an offer on it but walked away from it in the end
any idea what it could be?
doesn't sound like little ends but maybe camshaft or a sticky cam follower?
it was a 1.6 Zetec SE engine if that makes a difference

I would check the condition of the oil, and maybe change it if it's really old. Check the condition of spark plugs and they are all firing. Check the condition of the timing belt that it has all it's teeth and while your at it check the timing itself. I would get a compression test done.

The next thing you could try if your handy with some tools, is to remove the rocker cover and have a looksie, check if the inside of the cover isn't being fouled by anything. Also check the engine mounts as they can be misleading and make it sound like an engine problem. The manifold could be cracked or flexi pipe too.

Just a few things to consider, I wouldn't rule out some bigger problem such has the main bearings. If that is the case it wouldn't be worth time nor money putting right.

There are plenty other cars out there with an up to date MOT for not much more than you paid. It might be worth more from the scrap value.

Edit: I just re read your post and see you have walked away from it , good idea. I certainly wouldnt' entertain anything without an MOT at least. It sounds like you got lucky this time.

These 1.6 focus are dreadful, seen so many pack up over the years, seemed to be the engines were the worst of the focus range

Seems like we made the right move then, cheers guys

Picked up a 53 plate 1.6 Civic with a year's mot on it for £250 today, has a little knock from the n/s corner which we think is a drop link, and given that there were two brand new ones in the boot ready to fit, I think we're right. Even if it's something more serious, my lad works for Honda, so should be relatively inexpensive to sort

I've killed plenty off on MOT for burning oil, but not heard many with major rattles. Even when they come in with no oil they are normally nice and quiet.
