This will work for most browsers:

Click on the Help menu at the top, there should be an option in there marked "About...": click on it, it should tell you the exact name and version number of the browser you're using.

I don't remember NTL using a proprietary browser in the way AOL used to enforce, so it's likely to be a "re-badged" version of IE.

cheers dude it says the following version:6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519

dont no if this means anything to you. just been trying to get onto a web site and it kept saying

" unfortunately your browser cannot read javascript, which is needed to view this site

please update your browser to the latest version"

any idea how fix it?

What site are you trying to view? Javascript is turned 'on' by default in IE, but your security level in IE (Tools>Internet Options>security tab) could be the cause.
