1.6 16v Fiesta Zetec S Engine Advice Needed???
Were lookin into buyin a fiesta Zetec S and would like 2 confirm which engine 2 go for as im led 2 beleive that there is a phase 1 and a phase 2.
Apart from a few cosmetic changes between the 2 phases im led 2 beleive that that there is sumthing different with the bottom end due 2 some kind of failure at around 50,000 miles on the phase 1.
Can any1 shed sum light on this 4 me? As dont want 2 go 4 a phase 1 and end up havin it fuct a yr down the line!!
Thanks in advance

A very small amout of phase 1 engines fail. Half the time its down to the owners not checking the oil reguarly and running it dry.
The phase 2 car is the more desirable to have anyway
www.zsoc.com can tell you in more detail

I'm not exactly sure if it's the same but i had a Focus 1.6 Zetec S and the bottom end gave out at 60k - oil ring failed on 3 pot and the piston skirt was scuffed...
I replaced it with a Zetec SE (the later 1.6 16v)
So it may well be the SE you're looking for...

All the mk5 fiesta zetec engines were zetec-se engines. The se has a problem with oil starvation, which in turn kills bottom end.
Providing the oil has been changed every 10k everything should be ok. Listen for a knock on idle and under load ~3k.

i have a phase 1 - totally sound car, check to make sure its had regular oil changes at the correct intervals and it'll be 100%.
I'm not sure where the urban myth of the 'phase 1 engine failure' started but it is a complete crock or crap - neglect the engine and suggested servicing schedule and you will risk engine damage same as any car.
Whether you want a phase 1 or 2 is down down to preference - there are slight differences with each, both mechanically and cosmetically - go on over to www.zsoc.com for the lowdown!
