They have a safe point that you turn the crank to i believe and then just be careful when you strip it,should all be covered in the manual...

they are not as bad as people make out! you should set the cam timing to 'safe' before removing the head and don't turn the crank once it's removed. if the head needs skimming because the head gasket has made a massive imprint in the head arround the fire ring area then the head needs to be put in the bin as it's soft in which case a second hand head is a good option (i can supply!). btw only use a genuine rover headgasket.. copies are shite..
martin.

Nope the btm end will not fall out if you take out the bolts out.

Make sure to buy new stretch bolts before assembling though.

Cheers

a rover head gasket is £8 more and yes it will fail very quickly if the copy gasket is not a metal type.. buy genuine and do the job once, change the dowels to metal oon's while you're at it

the bolts are reuseable as long as they are within a certain length

no not tdc.. 'safe' all the pistons will be level. if you run a straight edge along the cam pulleys all the marks will be in alignment.

Yep as Martin said look in from the wing at the pulleys and all the marks on them will be horizontal. Its then safe.

You can get a tool to hold them in this position if you feel its necessary.

Then the rest is normal yes

Strip the head in a specific sequence by releasing torque on all bolts first before removal.

martin-reyland is deffo right!
my mate has head gasket go on his rover a little while ago,
used a non-rover gasket, and it went again just yesterday
about 4000 miles later.

the bolts do go a long way down, but nothing should fall to bits when
you take them out
managed to keep the bottom end all in one piece when did mates anyway lol
