Jake,
I'm a QS for a building contractor [Although I have degree in Building Surveying ]
What kinda qualifications/experience have you got? You need to know about or understand the following: SMM7, Bills of Quantities and Take-offs, Contract terms/conditions/claims, Procurement and management of sub-contractors. [On top of an understanding of building and/or civils]
It ain't bad line of work to be in, always busy and varied, but good career possibitilies, and QS' seem to be in short supply at the minute, i'm always getting calls and trying to be poached by other firms . The company I work for has good training schemes [see http://www.hbgc.co.uk/ for their recruitment info].
