Think i have the info
If you acquire twelve points in a three-year period then you become liable for disqualification under the totting up procedure. This will be a minimum six-month period. Disqualification can be avoided if the court can be persuaded that you will suffer "exceptional hardship". Please note that losing your job is not necessarily considered to be exceptional hardship!
Penalty points are removed from your licence after disqualification, unless you are disqualified for less than 56 days, in which case they will stay on your licence.
Penalty points count toward "totting up" for three years but they are not actually removed from your driving licence for another year so, they stay on your licence for four years. The date that counts, for the purposes of totting up, is the date of the offence not the date that the points were actually put on to your licence.
Penalty points can be ordered for various offences and the totting up procedure applies regardless of the offence. See below.

Taken from the DVLA website....
Here's the full part from the DVLA website.....
1. Endorsement Guide
Disqualifications, convictions and acceptance of fixed penalties payments in respect of driving offences are notified to DVLA by the courts. The details are entered on to the driver's record and the licence. In addition to paying a fine/fixed penalty the drivers licence will be endorsed with a penalty ranging from 3-11 points or a period of disqualification will be imposed, depending on the seriousness of the offence. Any driver who incurs 12 or more penalty points within a 3-year period is liable to be disqualified under the "totting -up" system. Information on a driver's entitlement and endorsements are sent to courts and police on request.
Endorsements must remain on a licence for 11 years from date of conviction if the offence is :
drinking/drugs and driving (shown on the licence as DR10, DR20, DR30 and DR80).
causing death by careless driving whilst under the influence of drink/drugs (shown on the licence as CD40,CD50 and CD60).
causing death by careless driving, then failing to provide a specimen for analysis (shown on the licence as CD70).
or 4 years from date of conviction if the offence is as listed below :
reckless/dangerous driving (shown on the licence as DD40,DD60 and DD80),
offences resulting in disqualification.
disqualified from holding a full licence until a driving test has been passed.
or 4 years from the date of offence in all other cases.

The Extra year is because if you were caught again near the end of the 3 years ( for SP)
by the time of the conviction (probably after the 3 year period) the points would have been removed and could not be seen for totting up.

So, when it comes to insurance renewal I can say that the points have now gone? I only had the three points anyway so wont make a bit of difference!

adam no you must tell them if they appear on your license. They usually ask between 3 and 5 years so sometimes you can have to tell them after 4 years but then you can pay to take points off and "forget" to tell em lol
and they usually ask for a photocopy of license so dont mess about or you'll get caught
