Seems they can be picked up fairly cheap now and i'm assuming their bullet proof :?

Can anyone give some advice on them? i.e. reliability, running costs & tuneability? :)

Cheers :top:

For a turbo car there slow :(

Dash is very dated and boring IMO.

Suspension was like driving a jelly, no where near as good as a Focus at cornering.

VW hold their prices so i doubt your find one that cheap

Relaible car tho :top:

Thats probably because his plastic re-circulating dump valve is broken. (top right of the engine bay just under the pastic cover)

My cousin is a VW tech and he says they have a lot of faults!

Mate test drove a couple and bought a 106 GTi instead, said he much preferred it!

They go for about 5k upwards now!

Rich_w Aug 13, 2005 01:22 PM

There not terribly unreliable in my experience. Its all pissy stuff. Not major mechanicals. Stuff like the window regualtors breaking, and the fact they're easy to break into without setting the alarm off (Watchdog reported on this 2-3 years back) Minor trim stuff like the seat stitchings breaking, airbag faults, washer jet pipes coming off.

Engines are pretty good as are the gearboxes. And respond well to tuning

jr Aug 13, 2005 01:27 PM

i work for VW and although they do have there common faults, they are very good cars, depends what you've had before etc IMO

the front window regs are know to fail, VW have made a modded version now so be warey of this, as there £220 a side to replace (the way you can tell if they have been done is with the window all the way down about 5-10mm of glass still sticks up) worht know IMO as expensive when they go wrong

there put toghter very well IMO, the interiour trim wares quite well, door trims alwasy seem to be fucked though

Also take one for a test drive and listen for knocking, as the plastic antiroll bar links do like to snap

apart from that cant really think of much else of the top of my head

jr Aug 13, 2005 01:29 PM

as yes as mentions the rear washed jets blow the pipe off, soaking the latch and making the boot warning light come on, and airbag faults are quite common,

Air mass metres are so so common on these, but at only £70 ish (not bad IMO) on exchange if you do need to replaced it its not that bad

I've been thinkg of getting a Golf 1.8T anniversary - Same sorts of problems i assume. ??

cos jon Aug 13, 2005 03:48 PM

Also thinking about an R32 - Has anyone heard of any problems with these ??

jr Aug 13, 2005 04:15 PM

would much rather have a 25th anni for much less £££

cos jon Aug 13, 2005 04:35 PM

Are the R32's not worth the cash then ??

SAFFYCOSSIE Aug 13, 2005 05:18 PM

I would consider a Audi A3 T sport. There are a little more expensive but a far better car in my opinion. I have just got one and love it :top:

I've been checking out the S3's mate, there rather nice. But they seem to look rather plain !!, but then again i suppose the R32 still looks like a normal golf with wheels.

I was tempted with teh R32 cos its relatively new car

This is the problem form having an escort cossie, its so in your face wherever you go !! aint many cars that can match that.......

Not IMO no

jr Aug 13, 2005 06:01 PM

i would have a Golf over an Audi, the majority of componants are the same, but golf has far better interior

Lee_R21Turbo Aug 13, 2005 06:50 PM
