what a load of bollox, who the fuck in their right mind would leave their escos parked up on the roadside for a couple of years????? anyone would think he took it from someone's garage!!!

Gaz made inquires at the local houses & no one knew anything about the car, then he inquired with the police, then the DVLA, i can't belive it sat there for as long as it did, its a bit of a shithouse area where we are & most half decent motors go missing no matter how much security they have, the car just sat there, even the council were meant to move it but never bothered!!
any one who knows Gaz will tell you that he's no thief, he went through all the proper channels & got the car. fair play Gazza

if he is in jail/dead/abroad then why aint a mate or relative moved the car,put it on a drive/garage etc you dont just leave it parked on a street and expect after x amounts of years for it to still be there if the tax has way run out.

Gaz, I got no problems with you claiming it - ya lucky ****!

But the law is an ass - it must belong to somebody!!

There is a house near me that hasnt been lived in for a few years, but if i break in and take the cooker, thats theft!

Maybe if i put a letter through the door saying im going to take their stuff unless you write back telling me not to.. that would be ok in some way?!

you could do that but you be done for breaking and entering and you'll be nicked since you have nothing in writing/document saying you have the property

when i saw the car without tax i could of made attempt to move it but would of been done for theft so thought no way am i touching it unless i get proper reason too(logbook) but never really thought i would ever get that far.

but i went through all the correct channels even the police so i see as i did nothing wrong

The log book isn't proof of ownership it even says so on it! If or when the owner decides to track it down whether its tomorrow or in 10 years its still their car and I reckon u will be getting a slap if they do. and also how do you know the tax ran out in 2000? Is it because thats what the tax disc said? Maybe the newest tax disc wasn't in the car for some reason.

You say the car was there sat there for 2 yrs or whatever,,then the next min when you go to pick it up it gets nicked? after being sat there for 2yrs? mmmm

it does indeed sound too good to be true...

however it has been known for these drug dealery types to need to disappear pronto. maybe the dealer who owned it pissed someone off and needed to get out the country.

same thing happened a few years back by me nans house in bristol...brand new range rover top the range....dumped in a pub car park with the keys in it.. never reported stolen, registered in a fake name, and no one ever claimed it. till this day i'm sure avon police have it in storage

its alrite swiping the cossie, but when the 6ft8 20 stone shaven headed drug dealing woman beating psycho whos just done 8 years in jail comes out and finds his precious cossie gone then maybe it wont appear such a good idea.

but fair play to ya...wish i cud find a parked up cossie

Marco providing the car isn't parked on the road you're OK, nobody has the right to come onto your property and take it without going and getting the police involved, in which case they'd be screwed for clearly trying to pull a fast one. The law only applies to cars on the roadside which are in effect considered abandoned.

To be blunt I think anybody who leaves their pride and joy out on the road and doesn't provide the means to be contacted, i.e by supplying a forwarding address or getting friend/family to check the post clearly and doesn't tax the car in line with the law doesn't really deserve more than one chance to stop somone else claiming it's abandoned.

What would you rather the DVLA do? The only way they can try and contact the registered keeper is via the details provided in the V5. Would your rather they handed the car over to the police and they made money selling them at auctions? Or perhaps the council took them away and crushed them?

In my friends case the DVLA provided the contact details of the registered keeper and he actually contacted them. It turned out to be registered to a garage owner who, when contacted, said my friend was welcome to take the car and he wouldn't be responding to the letter from the DVLA.

While there is the worry that somebody could effectively go around trying to claim almost every car they like the look of is abandoned I doubt they could do it without being red flagged very quickly.

maybe the car was chillin in sum guys garage he hugged it and said good bye then flew off to some foreign country to work for a few years sum lads knew it was there or stumbled across it and thought to themselves this is nice and proceded to hack away at the loom removing the alarm and immobiliser drove off and went for a baloon in it then it ran out of petrol and they are skids so they left it where it was till they scrounged enough money for another joy ride and then smashed it through a wall and fucked off so the rightful owner doesnt know its gone yet to report it stolen.

It was their car!

This law has been put in place for one rerason, to make money for the government.

If you dont tax a car it is considered abandoned, the DVLA will then write to the keeper and ask whos car it is, if they dont get a reply then because it has no tax it is an abandoned vehicle. As it is abandoned you can claim the car.

This is what my council do, and they sell loads of cars this way and make loads of money.

Because councils are run so badly they didnt pick the motor up and sell it,
GAZ@RACE-SPEC Motorsport got in first and good luck to him I say.

Top result mate, my company move untaxed motors for the council and i will be keeping my eyes peeled from now on.

All the people that are saying this is immoral etc think of it like this, you find 15K in a suit case, you do the right thing and hand it in to the old bill, after 6 months or whatever they call you saying that according to law etc etc the money hasnt been claimed and as you found it you can have it, will you A.say no thanks it's probably drug or blood money or will you B.Get down the cop shop quick sharp and pick up your 15 big ones?

I know what i'd do and you lot saying its wrong would do exactly the same!!!!!

Althoagh to proper criminal's a 15K getaway car will be a minor expendature i would be alittle concerned about the previous owner coming back for the car.

But nonetheless Result Gaz just a shame i didnt find it first

but as stated by others, i'd be worried about the real owner tracing you down...
Thats EXACTLY what I was thinking, most people wouldn't bat an eyelid if was a crap old car left on the road but as its an Esc Cos that makes it different!? Not IMO

Well Done to Gaz IMO, if you've gone through the proper channel's and got advice from the 'real' people in the know i.e. DVLA, Police, Local Council, then good luck to ya!

Any plans for it?

congratulations mate, looks like u got some amazing luck there, its surprising how many people dont bother to go to the effort for something like that. What are your plans for the car, strip it/sell it and make a tidy profit or fix the bit of damage and drive her?

Im not gonna say anything about the legality, im big enough to say im fooking jealous and i dont wanna piss on your parade!
