RST - Rocker Cover Gasket...

RST - Rocker Cover Gasket...
noticed the other day that there was oil around the gasket.. not loads, but enough to notice..
Its a Cork one, and has been on since rebuild 3/4 years back..
Are they prone to going, or is it just a case of needing a tighten???
Other alternatives, as i have seen people use plastic ones
Im thinking, because the car had been sat for over a year, it may have had an impact on it... One last thing, are they easy to change

Westy ive always used the rubber gaskets on my CVH's and never had any leaking problems Dont know finis but its the one for a sierra 1.8 so you shouldnt have any problems getting hold of one. Straight swap over and as Lewis says, dont overtighten the bolts as they can snap or split the gasket.
Pic of one on my old Grey S2, you can see the lip of the gasket sticking out

CHristian uses regular ford gaskets. Even a ford headgasket
I tried the rubber one and it doesnt go straight on it needs to be trimmed where the cam pulley is and around the front also.
Best bet is get a cork gasket and a tube of Hylamar Blue gasket sealant.
You wont get it leaking wiht that stuff on

the cork gaskets go hard and brittle with the heat, if you've had it on there for that amount of time it will defo need changing!!
Get a rubber one, if you go to Halfords get them to check their stock on the rubber ones, I got a couple as they had discontinued them, Ł3 each

fooking hell all these posts over a snotty gasket!
cork gasket will be fine... no reason why it wouldnt be but it it does need changing every year or two.
ive never tried a rubber one myself but imagine they do the same job as the cork ones but are less liekly to leak due to them not going brittle,
as for replacing it.. you cant go wrong you will need a 10mm and 13mm socket and a flathead screwdriver

I use a Genuine Ford Cork Gasket. They are fine, although with mine, they are never in long enough to go brittle!! Infact, I dont replace mine every time I take it apart. I have never had any leakage problems.
The Ford one is fitted with small Metal 'Dowels' to help prevent over-tightening. If you make sure the Head Face and Rocker Cover Face is clean and that you dont over-tighten it, it won't leak. Just slightly more than a 'Nip' on the bolts will do it. If the gasket hasn't been out for a while, parts of it will be baked onto the Rocker cover, this must all come off, even if it means using a Wire Wheel/brush (be sure to clean up before putting back together!!).
HTH.

just finding my feet
rubber ones are fine and the advantage is that there reusabke and there discontiued at halfords so cost around 2.51
the cork onmes are fine but are not reusable even though it is possable to do it
i stuck a rubber one on mine as i dont wanna replace my every year or so, just wanna fit and forget it

Ditched my cork one for the rubber one off the 1800 CVH. Very happy. Will change the one on the FRST as well when I get a chance. Cheap as chips too and you can re-use them.
