everything is ok now....with the search button on.... :DD:

Just because the search button is there doesn't mean the site will run slowly.

Its when one or more people do a search it can slow a forum down.

The PF datadase is HUGE! Now If one or more people decide to do a few searchs thing of all the information it will slow the site down bigtime!

A good way around this is to have an "offline" database.

Searchs are quieried in the offline database - and not the current one with all the quality, highly informativve posts in it

at say 3am every morning the offline database gets update with the current pf database - ok so there will be a 24hour delay in finding recent posts, but surley this wouldn't cause a problem as any recent topics people are looking for should be about one or two pages down?

Just an Idea like, and would take a lot of strain off the server when peeps search for "Cossie"

Go on Si the Neville..... :p

Stu @ M Developments May 24, 2005 08:55 AM

The problem with that is the 24 hour database will be around 20 pages out of date!! PF shifts too much data to be so far out of date, and all your favourite features would be useless, such as "View posts since my last visit" and "View posts in last 24hrs" Etc. Etc.

Pet is still modifying the way its searched and indexed and it should be almost finished by tonight all being well.

Bear with us.. it all takes time, and we leave it online so you can still use it where most take it offline totally for days whilst things are worked on, which is of course an option if folk prefer.

SimonT May 24, 2005 09:26 AM

Prefer the tag "Norman" ta Dave

Fair enough Stu I see your point - maybe a bit of PF research needed?

"Do you use the search button to look for topics less than 24hrs old?" I personally never do. I'm sure some do - but how many?

Also I see your point about the unanswered / last visit posts! :wall:

Not having a dig in anyway mate just trying to put forward a few suggestions :D

Azrael May 24, 2005 09:28 AM

Many hundreds use the "View new posts since last visit. Including me. If that was once a day, it would no longer work ;)

If that is aimed at me and is regarding the ECU. What post is it that prooves I have cheated you?
You were obviousley not aware there should be an added module on the ECU or you wouldn't have accepted it and tried putting it in your car so is it not possible that I was also not aware and it was an honest mistake?

Azrael May 25, 2005 12:27 AM

I am quite inclined to belive you. In fact it may be stupid but I do believe you, still in the morning I was seriously pissed off, in facted I was even more pissed of by the fact that it did occure to me that Stu posted pics of their module for EEC IV on forums and I DID ask you about that. Still I overreacted a little bit for which I am sincerly sorry.
