Legal Towing

Hi all

I passed my test after January 1997, so from what I've read.... am I correct in thinking I can tow up to 3500kg on my standard license?

I'd be towing a MK2 XR2 on a trailer with a long wheelbase transit custom - I think that should be slightly under 3500kg?

Check your licence online mate it lists everything I didn't think I had it on mine until I looked online

Pretty sure anything over 750kg towed you need the extra licenses ? Which pretty much any car/trailer combo will be, unless they're toy cars.

I looked into this in much detail, if you passed after 1997 but before the next change. (Can’t remember when that was). You can tow a 3500kg vehicle with a 750kg trailer

or

a combined weight of vehicle and trailer of 3500kg

for example if your car had a gross weight of 2295kg you would be able to tow 1205kg in trailer

be very careful with trailer choices because it also goes on the mam of the trailer, you can’t even tow a trailer plated at 3500kg empty

i built my own from a caravan chassis and because it’s old and doesn’t have a weight plate to capacity is taken from the max weight shown on the tyres,

Ok thanks for info.
Searched on link above for my license - see attached pic

I interpret that as.... as long as the combined weight of van, trailer and car being towed doesn't exceed 3500kg them I'm legal?
Or am I missing something?

Gross train weight 3500kg. Sometimes your licence has a little letter after the category that is a restriction. Sure one on them states you can only tow a 750kg trailer
I’ve my class 2 now but before that I could drive up to 7500kg but my licence had a restriction saying I could only tow a trailer of 750kg

Looking at my license I have a BE category and it’s dated 26/1/96 so I can tow any size trailer on a vehicle with a mam of 3500kg
