Default Bonnet smelt of burning - young driver

Hi,

I am a young driver with not a lot of knowledge about cars. Sadly, I wasn’t told by anyone about the maintenance to prevent what has happened.

I have a Ford KA titanium 11 plate. Yesterday, I was driving to work and the heater wasn’t warming up. When I parked my car, there was a screeching sound coming from the bonnet so I opened it and smelt burning. I filled the coolant with water once it had cooled just to get me home after work. When I got home, and parked, I noticed the fan was really loud, and whilst driving the car was rattling.

I took it to a mechanic who my mum vaguely knows who drove it and said the temperature was almost on red, and the fan was “fucked” in his words. I asked for a price but he said he didn’t know and he was going to do it out of work to make it cheaper. He was too busy flirting with my mum to give me a straight answer and I’m not sure if he’s dodgey or not. Can someone help me, what does this sound like? And is there a price estimate ? He didn’t give me one.

Thank you!

I wonder if we need to see a pic of your mum?

a few things to check 1) water level when Engine is cold. 2) find out if the fan is belt driven or electric. 3)is the car losing any water?

do not drive it if the temp,is going in to the red, you can ruin the engine.

You need to learn the basics such such as checking the oil and water regularly.

most people are not dodgy but ask the mechanic for the prices as he goes and post up on here.

+1 on pics of your mum, maybe you too?

If the heaters weren't working, I bet the water pump has seized.

The plastic heater hose stub on the thermostat housing goes brittle and breaks off on these causing a big coolant loss. I've replaced a few, the after market replacement have a metal pipe stub so it won't happen again.

Pictures if your mum would also help.

Really...if you've driven the car after it has spat all the water out, overheated it and it's making rattling noises....

That is likely going to be pretty catastrophic damage. It may need an engine, or extensive engine repairs. Really you need to find a competent mechanic who isnt going to rip you off. Although if he fancies your mum, maybe he'll be a bit easier to deal with !

But weigh up potential costs vs what the car is worth....as it could get expensive.

These have a pipe off the thermostat housing that fails, it's so common I carry one on the breakdown van as core stock.
