you wouldn't need an mg expert to find big rust holes youd just need someone with a pair of fully functioning eyes

As others have said, if you want one of these if you can find a rust free one you'll be very very lucky, especially at that sort of money.

Yeah my friend said the really prone to rust now so many of them r so old only going to get tougher to find a gd one. I think aswell just aswell. Lot ppl ebay like to lie. Only reason got sucked into wanting it because exact same colour and model of my grandfather mg that my family sadly sold off yrs ago after passed away. Told there constant maintaince needed to?

The thing is pretty much all cars of that era were prone to rust, and they're very old cars now. They didn't know how to prevent rust back then.
It didn't look expensive for what it was but yes, you'd need to be handy with the a welder though, although mechanically they'll be a lot simpler to work on than the cars we have now, none of this elastic trickery that's on new cars.

Probably the best outcome for you, forget about it and start looking for a decent MGB.

I think you'll need deeper pockets to find a nice one though.

Usual places, boot floor, wheel arches, bottom of doors, cills and if you can look underneath have a good poke around. If its been dry stored for 10 years it may be pretty good. Good luck with this one.

lets face it your not going to find a 40 year old mg with no rust unless its had a complete restoration and its top end money, its just how far you want to go and what work your willing to do yourself to keep it on the road.

so had a good poke about the arches looked good he said they were re welded years ago if true they did a good job the paint job, but were some bits peeling in odd areas, i bit more shocked under the bonet to behonest the engine casing looked far more rusty then i thought it should be. took a look undernieth and it was so so def bits rust and rusty bits (forgot to check the boot! i did give it a test drive (bit tricky with the choke) he said engine was still cold just gave it a few laps around car park area as still trying to get it through mot. think car be more worth £1500 as clearly needs some work but he wont budge past 2k, water pump was leaking but he said he replace that for me. he nice chap said drive it half way to mine to pick up. thoughts??

The thing is for £2k you are not going to get a mint condition old MGB. You either have to be prepared to do work on it yourself or up your budget by quite a bit to get a really good, ready to drive straight away, restored or very low mileage original one.

oh yeah totally agree i get that, just wish he take £1500 just not sure at 2k its even worth it because for extra grand at 3k were more mint ones about but this car how much would it need, as i said more concerned at rust under the bonnet, remember my grandfathers one was so good but was 15yrs ago now he passed away nice to see same car again and sit my son in it before i gave it a drive he said he struggling to sell it at 2k and did not understand why he said he wanted 3k before :/

Robsters. What you have not spoken about is are you a hands on guy with a decent garage, welder, tools and maybe paint spray equipment etc? If you are and feel confident enough to sort out a cheaper MGB with problems then go for it. However if you will need to get the car sorted by an MGB specialist the costs will be high and then maybe spending more money on a good one would make more sense. We would all like to find a really good old car at a cheap price but its unlikely to happen.

i am a hands on guy on basic mechanics but not exactly equipped to restore a car even though i would like make a project of this car but not at 2k starting price because as you say either spend more get better one.i offered him £1650 did not want to be really insulting to him...see what he says

I just had a look on Autotrader, the cheapest one which sounded ok was £4750 and then they jump up to £6 to £8k for really nice ones.

i am clued up he told me it was a rust free with MOT mgb gt so can you blame me for driving down to take a look only to more rust then i thought i'd find this not about 2k or spending 5k if that much rust its major risk. if was rust free or minimal rust then id of grabbed myself a bargain that i could of made money from, parts of chassis look like parts off the titanic

Are you talking about the black open top one, reg no TCF 544S at £2950? If so it states the bodywork needs metalwork and probably a respray.

i dunno about that one its not online now but either way there are mgb at 3k which are ok not saying wont need some body work but at least have mot and drivable as one i saw had ton of major mot failures as well as body work issues, def more a project car hence my offer of 1650 he decline but some ways im glad because i think only really worths £1200 given work it needs otherwise yeah i rather save 3k and get some needs less work, but i put my plans on hold for while until i can save more, i just regret my folks selling my grandfather mgb...anyone know is there a way to track a car down that was sold in the past?
