new fangled jump starter packs..help
Ive just got one of these new type jump starters, its charged up ok etc, says its at 99%, now i was gonna go round to a mates cos he has a flat battery, just decided to measure the voltage on the croc leads for this, and its nearly 17v
is this gonna cause damage on someones car? is this thing faulty, i just put a car bulb on it while still measuring, and it didnt drop a milli volt or anything..
hmmmmm, used to have the old bigger chunky heavy types and that was around 12.7v ish...
this was from amazon, reduced from £170 to £43, i did use a 20 quid amazon voucher, so it only stands me at £23....
do you think its cak?

They are "smart" and often adjust their voltage.

I got an Antigravity Micro-Start Mini (XP-5) last year, since the Lexus seems to love flattening it's battery, and I now need to use it everyday as my main transport. Of course, now I use it everyday it no longer flattens it's battery so I haven't needed it 0 even a couple weeks ago when I parked up and went to a gig, came back 4 hours later to find I'd left the interior light on, the battery was still fine!
However, it's an awesome little bit of kit - barely bigger than a smart phone (bit thicker) but will jump a V6 engine multiple times in a row no problem. Mine's a straight six (2L) and I tested it by disconnecting the battery completely, connecting the jumper cables to the battery cables and turned it over - instant start, no fuss.
You've just got to remember to keep on top if it's charge. It will naturally discharge itself, especially when left outside in a cold vehicle over winter. You shouldn't really try jumping things if the batter is below 75% and not at all if under 50%.

I’ve never seen jump starting cause an issue if done right and we do it loads at work. Un till a while ago when a work mate jumped a truck and blew the tacho. New tacho was a grand! Your meant to turn the head lights on so excess voltage has somewhere to go. I do it every time now
