Sometimes you might be able to make it pretty smooth, others not. But a lot depends on overall drivetrain to. If everything is fairly tight, box rubber mounted etc then any clunks would be less noticeable anyway.
But you can never expect it to be as smooth as a synchro box. But then a full manual synchro box will never shift like a dog box when racing.
A few years back the Nissan Skyline GTR gearbox conversion was considered a good option for a big BHP Cosworth. Does anyone still offer it and how does it compare to these gearboxes which you are talking about?

As far as I am aware only Reyland offered the conversion. My bellhousing when I had Skyline box was done by MK but Coley and M K with the WRC Fiesta cut and welded their own bellhousings to stitch on to the cossie end.

The reyland one was an OS Gicken kit but it was £10k drive in drive out job.

The Skyline box is a lot heavier than a standard box

I took my skyline box out of the car at least 8 times before it worked and that was flippin hard work, when I went back to the MT75 it felt like I was changing a starter motor in comparison.

This thread is primarily about 2wd boxes....4wd obviously changes the options

Another popular box these days for those wanting a synchro is the 350z CD0009

Ratios may not always suit, but the boxes are fairly affordable, will obviously shift very good being modern Japanese and are supposed to be very strong.

There are many fitting kits for different motors ( 2JZ, LS V8, Various Nissan engines etc ), although I doubt a Cossie is one of them.

That is a big extra weight to carry which I was not aware of.

A lot of money when you you compare it to some of the other modern gearbox options being talked about.

Exactly, when you can pick up an rx8 gearbox to replace a type 9 for hundreds. If you can find a production car alternative it can be great.

I'm running a fixit semi straight cut CR 4x4 box and it is too slow to change - easy to beat the syncros.

Howevere, with drop gears & 4.4 diff it makes for nice ratios for hooligan road going kit car, prob want a different diff for a track car.

They are not 40kg heavier at all.

I did mine over 6 years ago. I can lift the complete box. Just. I reckon maybe 10 or 15kg heavier, but they dont break on the back of a 4 cylinder unless your a knob with shifting gear.

I believe the Skyline boxes are actually 25kg heavier. I was told by quite a few sources that the syncros do not like to be rushed so if you shift too quick you can damage them and then you get the crunch on change, IIRC it is 2nd to 3rd that is the often hit one.

I can just about lift the box and move it on my own but I certainly couldn't carry it the length of my drive and I could easily do that with the Cossie box.

The problem is the users not the box.

Expecting huge inertial force to dissipate quickly at Skyline high rpm is madness.
mine is fine, and i rally it, so mechanical sympathy is the key.
The top and bottom is, they dont break gears, MT75 does.
The alternatives are what you have or other aftermarket gearkits.
But, you dont get active centre diff.

Agree, I would love to have my oppliger with the active centre diff, that would be perfection for me as I really liked the 2 sides the the car being able to play in 2wd mode.

I'm sure if you really wanted ( ie ££ ) you could adapt the Skyline transfer case/drive onto the Ford boxes to allow you control over the centre diff.

I hadn't ever thought about that. I think some of the WRC escorts had active diffs but suppose that was a whole new sequential box.

As you say, I think that would be £££££ and it is a brave move when my box already cost me £4.5k all in to then start experimenting and chopping (albeit the case is standard MT75 with just a spacer on the Oppliger "long" box)
