Mk2 Focus ST vs BMW 330d

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
Well having a new 320d and before 318d coming from a Mondeo MK4 (first mk4 then the slight facelifted one), I must say for long distance driving the Mondeo beats the BMW (3 series) hands down. (oh and you can fit groceries in the Mondeo, lol)
The Mondeo however is a hell of a lot more thirsty than the BMW.

This is why I've gone for the estate version of the 3 series cos I knew the boots on the saloons are very small, which isn't ideal for a family of four.

With the 330d estate you can pull up the "dog guard" in the boot so you get proper floor to ceiling roof space to stop stuff getting in to the passenger compartment, it is a roller net and if you fold the seats then the net can move forward to behind the drivers head...that's a lot of boot space.

Lol, working in a garage and now with the new job I have now I'd choose a mondeo over a BMW any day of the week (apart from an e36), I see some horror stories on almost a daily basis with bmws but only been out to one mondeo so far and that was because they had misfueled it! Each to their own and all that but I'm just talking from personal experience
Im not saying fords are the best cause all cars have there faults. Rather ive been lucky but the most unreliable Ford ive owned is my saff lol. Well it was.

My mate(who now works at the same place as me)used to work in a back street garage. He was always doing work on german cars, ie bms mercs audis. He has told me some horror stories too.

I had to recover a nearly new (at the time a couple of years or so back) Audi A3 that the water pump had decided it doesn't want be water tight any longer and pissed out all of the coolant.
Talking to the guy on the way with his car on the back he said it was the second time it's done it, the turbo was replaced under warranty as it was noisy and it had also had a DSG gearbox fault repaired under warranty as it lost all forward drive.
At the time I had my ST170 and my mk1 Focus RS. He asked what I drive so I told him and he just laughed and said I need to get a decent car and buy a German car! I just replied 'well it's your car on the back of my motor not mine!!'
He just laughed and said 'you've got me there, I can't argue with that!!'

Well I picked up the beemer yesterday and I'm really happy with it. Don't think I'm gonna miss a manual box too much.
The deal with the ST didn't go quite to plan! The bloke that was gonna buy failed to make sure he had funds in place and at the eleventh hour told me that his loan had been refused! Was gutted cos I then thought that I was gonna miss out on the beemer. But then my amazing parents so kindly offered to lend me what I needed until the ST sells. Not an ideal situation and not totally happy about it, but really happy I didn't miss out on a cracking car.
Needless to say the ST is now back on ebay. Hopefully it'll sell pretty quickly.
So my time with the blue oval is over for the time being. I've had a few fords in my time and all have been great. My first car was in fact a mk3 escort. My parents also had a few fords when I was growing up. So the blue oval has been quite special to me over the years. Bur for now it's time to move on. I'll still regularly visit this forum and still contribute as I think it's a great place with some good guys and girls on here.
Can anyone recommend any good bmw forums that I can get good information from?

Not so sure about that. I've seen some right states on MK1 Focus' lately and a few holes in the floor pans of MK2's.
Think when I have the time and funds I'm going to treat the underside of my MK3 Focus and wax all the cavities.

Think how old the newest mk1 Focus is now, 13-14 years old, there or thereabouts? The Focus was released in 1998 which means the oldest ones are knocking on the door of 20 years old now!!! Now think back to before the Focus came out. Fords used to rot a hell of a lot quicker back then wouldn't you agree?
I certainly see more mk1 Focuses plodding about now than I saw Escorts and Sierras floating about 10 years ago.
I see more seriously rusty E46 3 series and E39 5 series BMW's and plenty of Mercedes (every model but especially the E class) than I do mk1 Focuses of the same era!

I went out to VW Golf R last night that was basically running like crap and he's had stupendous amounts of problems with it, timing chain failure (and possibly the same again ), electrical faults, numerous software updates to fix certain issues etc...........
He's also got a Focus ST of the same age and it's never given him a days trouble!
I don't think he's too impressed with the VeeDub!

When Fords rust they get slated. When you see other rusty nackers no ome says owt lol.
Fookin VAG. Stick them up your ass ha ha. There boring looking cars anyway ha ha. To me the Audi A1 looks the same as. A A5 from the front.
I used to say Fords should of come from the factory with a welder in the boot lol.

If you can't tell the difference between an Audi A1 and an Audi A5 I suggest you clean the years of grime off your blinkers
I dread to think what the inside of your house looks like

I agree. I couldn't tell one Audi from another these days.
Back in the day it was a really special thing to own a car like a bmw or a Mercedes. I remember as a lad my next door neighbour got promoted and came home in a brand new e36 328. These days, as long as your giro and minimum wage packet can pay the monthly cost, you can have what you like.

I agree Ritchie. When i was little i thought if you owned a Bm?Jag?Merc or and Audi you were rich.
Now the people who own then cant afford to maintain them.
Anyway we are going off topic now and tbh Nick bought the bm do the thread should be closed.

E90 post is ok but its an American site, it has a uk section but its not massive. Most of the models sold here weren't sold in the US, your 330d included so you'll find little on there about it

I love beemers, just got a new 335d xdrive, the thing is awesome as a daily, 4wd so great all year round, crazy quick for a diesel, still does 40mpg and the road tax is only £!60 a year, whats not to like.

Glad to hear you got the bmw and you are happy with it. Pita about the guy making false promises and nearly costing you it but luckily your parents are stars and helped you out. At least you get to have a final look at which car you prefer so if you'd got the bmw and changed your mind that could have gone up for sale rather than the st. Shame you couldn't get to keep both.
Exactly Glenny boy!

Yet one of my mates works a lot with a tuning company that develops stuff for the Golf R and has said with a few bolt on parts you can get it in the 9's on the quarter. I have been tempted a few times by a golf as i've been out in golfs over the years but never actually owned one myself.
I'm an ex VAG master tech so I've worked on quite a lot of VAG stuff and I choose to drive a Ford rather than anything that VAG have to offer (that said I fancy a V10 RS6 but the running costs would be crippling for me).
I'm not saying they're a bad car but I just don't believe that they are as brilliant as everyone makes them out to be. It's just my opinion of course!

Same old story though, what has Ford bought out for the masses that's actually fun to own? Merc and BMW mainly rwd, audi had a 4wd option in most its model range, Ford where all FWD, biggest and most fun engine has been the 2.5 5 pot hasn't it? Also suffers from cracked liners iirc? All in a FWD chassis, even Volvo weren't that stupid iirc, they have just been white goods for way too long, the mk3 FRS is the first time they have listened to the masses but people have been criticising that as being a flop too but atleast they tried, then you look at the cosworths, EVERYONE!! and I literally mean everyone wanted one, everyone knew what one was and this is before the day of the Internet, personally I think they just aren't interested in pushing boundaries and just sell in the masses.

I agree they largely just put out mundane cars even st's don't interest me in the slightest.

9 sec quarters with bolt on bits? Really?
