Default Cosworth head prices!!!

.

After some info please, I've been offered a 2wd head and not sure what to value it at, spec is standard with new valve guides and valves, standard cams (no tappets) and just been rebuilt and not used, it has been freshly skimmed and the head measures 138.15mm.

What should I be looking to pay ?

Cheers in advance.

Ginger

I'd say about £750 due to the recent machining work but the height isn't that great.

He said he wants £900 which I thought was a bit steep, I thought £750 max was a bout right.

What machining has just been done?
New guides,valve seats recut,skim?
I just paid £1700 for the same head from Julian Godfrey complete fully machined and complete except tappets.
I didn't mind paying as I know what's been done as they did it and i have comeback if there's a problem.

I currently need a head aswell, turned this down for £650 due to the height... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/282528998772

You get into trouble with the valve seats once skimmed too much.

Depends what 2wd head it is. If its the later design with the holes like the 4x4 head then 900 quid is right if not more.

A plate made up to replace the lost height on the head, just sits between head and gasket, might be a hillbilly fix but I know of many cars that have run for years like it

I've recently taken my old engine apart after 18 years and 30k miles. its an early 2 hole thermostat 2wd head and was 137.4mm when it went in and its still good.

there's lots of folk using low hieght heads with no problems. i reckon the likelyhood of any problems is more to do with a bad tune or overheating than anything else. that said, heads which are thicker command more money.

I remember seeing 1 for sale a long time ago, skimmed so much the sides of the valve had been touched with the machine.

If you can't find a decent head then piston/valve contact will be inevitable, pocketing the pistons would be an option.

Heads can be used even if more than 0-5mm has been removed, this was the recommended maximum by Ford as any more would affect cam timing, emission and compression ratio on a car with standard management with standard size bowled pistons, this can all be corrected with verniers and remachining of the pistons.
Don't believe that article about valve seats falling out, that was a load of rubbish, you need to skim a lot more than 0.5mm before the seat will fall out.
The main thing are corrosion and hardness, if it has been overheated

Steve

I think the concern is mainly heads that are less than 138.00mm

Iv got a old head here iv made a coffee table out of, it has been over skimmed so that the valve seat has been machined flush with the block mating surface, is the anything can be done to re use this?

I sold a genuine RS500 head last year on eBay as I didn't know the actual value as I'd never seen one for sale separate from the block but it went on auction and sold for shy of £1300 with a 138.8 depth so based on that I believe a lot of these heads for sale are overpriced rubbish if they're beyond the recommended depth
