Don't go too cheap if you plan to keep it for a couple of years.

Thing is now most garages rarely do any welding anymore as cars don't rust like they used to and a lot of the younger guys coming into the trade can't weld as they haven't had the need/chance to do it. In the 90s when I started the welder was on the go all day every day welding up cars from the 80s that were only 10 years old.

A good welder is hard to find, the one that comes in to our work is constantly turning business away as he can't keep up with it.

Can't help but wonder why you don't want to fix the coolant leak, but you're thinking about paying to get the bodywork sorted? Priorities?

If you have a mk5 that has a leaking water pump, worn bushes and is rotting, you either need to cube it or throw some money down the drain

This is completly true. Have you ever tried fabrication and welding it takes time and skill to do it correctly.
Outer arches will turn into inners and same with the sills. And at even 30 quid an hour it really adds up.

At those prices do you think it can be done in a 10 hour day???
Prob 3 days which equals nearly a grand then there is the cost of consumables gas wire etc etc.....

ok calm down guys no need to bitch about me, yes the coolant leaks in my car because the idiot mechanic never put the new one in correctly in ireland now i have to get my mechanic to sort it, as for the body work i was quoted 1k and starting to realise for all the work he was going to do on my car it was cheapest quote i got, you say cube my car but i like it because it has no bloody computers in it nor was it built in china! it was built in england at dagenham, at least i wont have to worry about paying for some lights to be turned off on a computer, it does sadden me greatly seeing my car rusting away and sometimes think i rather restore my car even if it does cost bit more than buying another 2nd hand car and from what i see there not much going for under 2k on 2nd hand cars really all 8-10yrs old

£1k for arches and sills including paint isn't bad. If you want it sorting right you will have to pay.
