Default Just killed a 1.6 ecoboost.

Well I think I've just done the impossible. The 1.6 ecoboost in my mondeo started missfiring coming back from Skegness on Wednesday. Done a compression check today and cylinder 1 reads 0. Luckily it's still in warranty so off to the main dealers it go's. Checked on Google for missfires and burnt out valves etc. Absolutely nothing.
rang our technical bloke who comes round when we get stuck( I work in a Ford dealer but it's only small so we try and stay away from expensive warranty jobs as they take 6 months to pay up) and he said he's never heard if one going bang. He's guessing the injector on that cylinder has messed up,made it run lean, and either melt the piston or burn a valve out.

as long as they don't try and wangle there way out of it. You can't get pistons separately so would be a full bottom end of its melted one.

Hmmm......... I don't know to be honest mate!

I wouldn't say there's a particular make I get called out to more than anything else but I would say I go out to more German cars, though that might be because there are so many out there, I don't know.

I don't think there are any cars that are particularly unreliable these days really.

Quite a lot of the time, the breakdown is due to driver error!!

Not good. Ford are having many issues with engines inc the mk3 focus rs which have had blocks cracking and head issues. Just do a google to find out.

It's nuts you don't get it with trucks it's gets fixed I've done all sorts on warranty liners pistons conrods ive done 2 crank shaft changes we always rebuild gearbox's and diffs on drive line warrantys. Cars it's scrap or a hole new engine lol the high mileage second hand value of modern complex cars will be fook all. Makes you wonder as well how many of the little turbo cars with good power will be dead with melted pistons and things with fuel faults lol

I guess its the amount of hours taken to repair as its easier to replace. Cost of parts for mass produced cars will be cheaper than big truck parts.

I don't think they test or develop them properly, just have some "engineers" design an engine on a computer then that's it. Plastic this and aluminium that.

Don't think the new rs has a good gearbox or diff either, gone are the days of cars like an Impreza sti where a 6 speed box and diffs can handle 700hp.

Seen a few cases of cracked liners on 1.6 Ecoboost now. Seem to be popping up more regularly.

i bought one a couple of months ago with suspected headgasket failure. took the head out and there's a chunk of block missing with a large crack in one of the liners.
they're still a fantastic engine though. As with everything............ there's always a few failures.

they don't seem to be as bad as the old Mk2 focus ST for liner failure

I think it's just your car committing suicide because you took it to Skegness!! Either that or it died of shame being seen there!

from personal experience, it seems HG issues or maybe even block/liner issues are becoming more popular in this engine.
I wonder if this is something to be concerned about...... it was certainly a big issue in the volvo powered Focus

The cylinder head is now off and they can't see anything wrong with it.no burnt out valves and no melted piston. They've contacted Ford and it's now in there hands as to what they want to do with it.

Would still have compression without fuel though Glen. Either no air is getting in,or it can't compress it for some reason.

What are the rest of the Fords like for reliability these days? I know the diesel engines are Peugeot.

There's been a piece about it on "Inside Out West", not good for Ford at all and in some cases the customer service has been shocking. Did a recall to fit a coolant level alarm, surely fix the problem that causes the loss of coolant, it's a bit late having an alarm that tells you "you're out of coolant and your head might be cracked"

I watched it as well , seems Ford have got problems with the Ecoboost engines and quite a few cars have caught fire.At least now Ford have said they will cover peoples costs!

Is this the start of Ford going bust? I've heard they have been in debt for years.
