I've owned my saph cos 4x4 for 10 years now mostly at stage 3 spec and I've blown quite a few front driveshafts and now the box is starting to moan a little, will prob need a rebuild some time soon or may convert to 2wd as that's what I'm after. Then I've got a mate with an Escos running 400bhp and he's had no probs with his running gear.

No longer a cheap alternative for running more bhp as 2wd boxes are Ł800+ now and people are also asking stupid money for old worn out 7.5" diffs

My car broke the gearbox in merely minutes after exceeding 400bhp and that was on low boost map and low miles gearbox in a light car.

I now have an Oppliger long box semi straight cut and Supra diff with weir kit and front Quaiffe....it wasn't cheap to do. The Weak link on mine is probably the crown wheel on the front diff (according to bara) and the solution is the R&D front diff at Ł3500 ish. For now I have the strengthening plate and the Burton diff supports.

Ive had my cossie over 11 years. Ive changed no drive shafts and ive never had the gearbox out.

Good luck finding one. The prices are just silly at the moment.

Buy mine, it has an uprated box and launch control in it already

Lauching it will do the diffs in quicker than the box, I stripped third gear on my standard box with around 350bhp.

IMO if you go over ~300 bhp your transmission is on borrowed time.

Anything more than 300 ft/lbs of torque and it's a matter of when not if the box will shat itself, having said that though it does come down to driving style, I stripped third gear in my 4x4 saph with 326 bhp 312 ft/lbs of torque, when I strapped a gt30 blower to the car it made 420 Bhp and 400 ft/lbs and the gearbox lasted for a couple of years in fact I took it out and sold it in perfect working condition

I'd say anything over around 350hp and the same kinda torque driven with some mild abuse and you'd be pushing your luck, quick gearchanges and increased power will put significant strains on the box and any kind of regular hard launching the diffs will let go

Cheers Paul

I have no mechanical sympathy for mine. My 3dr is on its 3rd box now but it is running a BOA 24v.

The first box was type 9 and that cracked

Second box was a MT75 hybrid and that took plenty of abuse until the gear selector got stuck

Now running a V6 MT75 and i dont think it will last long

I thought the 2wd cars didn't have problems as the power was more easily wheelspun away....unless you had monster power and lots of grip.

Surely that's an easy swap to something that can handle a 2wd?

You would need a bell housing to fit a T5 to a V6.
Hence the hybrid 2wd box which has Dohc internals and a xr4x4 front section/bellhousing

Didn't know that, I heard the 6 was quite close ratio which helps.

I reckon 300lb/ft of torque is pushing the standard stuff, go aftermarket straight away. If I had a4wd cossie the first things I'd do is put a decent box and suspension on it.
