Default Sapphire Gearbox Earth

Sapphire 2.0 DOHC Ghia manual.

Noticed the earth strap from gearbox centre mount to body has parted, I am going to sort it of course but what purpose does it serve as there is a chunky engine earth from bellhousing to battery just inches away?

I expect it is just belt and braces....useful if the engine one had failed?

It don't need it and they was not fitted to a cos as standard. I think the gearbox one is on some models to help with static shocks etc.
