Astra VXR's - Opinions?
Probably get shot down here but...
These seem decent value for money, seen a few that sound lovely too! Anyone had/been in one? :) |
No comment lol.

Can be made to go very well indeed. Chassis is at best average and not a patch on the Focus. I always get out thinking it proves the old statement "You can make a shit car fast but then you have a fast shit car"
|
Good cars but typical Vauxhall build quality......gearboxes are made of chocolate they fail at any power level, can be made to go well.
|

Been in both.
Corsa is absolutely the worst 'new' car ive ever been in. I went with a mate to buy it and he also took me in it to buy my rs2k. Loud and boomy inside I was virtually deaf when I got out. Seats were solid and uncomfortable. Shit itself in the corners and this was the racing vxr, 236bhp or so it was claimed. Never pulled away through the a roads in fact I was all over it. Terrible car. Astra was better but that said I know a few people with them and all had gbox issues. My mates a massive Vauxhall fan and he even said a focus rs all day |
I'd rather wake up with my dad hanging out of my arse than wake up knowing I've got a vxr on the drive!

I've always quite liked the look of the vxr, never driven one in anger myself but I'm lead to believe they are a lit of a handful |

We had a 56 plate part ex at my old work and I took it for a spin after I serviced it and it did go bloody well, loads of torque steer mind |
id have an insignia vxr anytime. I wouldn't bother with the smaller models though. never had any build quality or mechanical issues with the company sri I had.
|
Think your safe with an Sri, had a few over the years for the missus to knock to work in but the vxr is pretty poor, the chassis is terrible and just can't handle the power, the one I test drove just under steered hopelessly but not as bad as the corsa, that thing should be condemned to the crusher, worst car I've ever been in and I've been in a mk5 escort
|
^ That bad? Fuck me it must be something to avoid
|
It really annoys me how every vxr owner corsa or Astra changes gear as soon as the boost comes in at low rpm and makes it pop and fart, you can tell 1 is coming a mile away as every gear change is the same.

Just buy a ST.
|
A friend has one, I wasn't overly impressed, especially considering my fettled 850 T5 shows it a clean pair of heals even in the bends!
The Corsa VXR is the one to go for, but even then I'd rather have the Clio. |

Yep, loads of them do it round my way too. Total ned's car.
|
there is shed loads of the things in Swindon, a guy drives a black one near my house and as said above he hammers it just to make the exhaust pop/fart....does my head in! 1st gear coming into a residential area and he's giving it beans to make it boost then brakes hard. very annoying at night when you're trying to go to kip!
a guy i worked with had a corsa VXR, goes well in a straight line but that's about it. he too had to have the gearbox rebuilt |
Have you thought about a Mazda 3 MPs mate they are a much nicer car and not as chavey as it as cheap on the inside as both the Astra or the Focus.

The Corsa VXR is the one to go for, but even then I'd rather have the Clio. Attachment 26847 For me personally, from a fun/handling perspective, the Corsa VXR Nurburgring was the one I'd have wanted to keep taking round the track. The Insignias were ok but the brakes were starting to smoke after a few hard laps. The Corsa N'Ring diff was really good, a Drexler plated, much more aggressive than the LSD ( GKN Super ) on my R53 Cooper S. You could feel it dragging you into the corners when you were on the power Touring Car driver, Paul O'Neill, was on hand to take you out in the Corsa VXR Nurburgring as well for a few flying laps and show you what it was capable of. He really got it sideways through the bends and was obviously enjoying it This wasn't the current new Corsa VXR by the way. The Astra was ok but the Corsa N'Ring was the one for me......although I'd like a VXR8 as well |
