As others have said, the E46 M3 is a bit boring to me as well. The E92 V8 M3 is a delight to drive though. I've now got a 400+bhp BMW 135i and have to say, it feels like a modern Cossie in many ways. Boost comes on quickly and aggressively but it's still refined enough to drive every day and it's RWD, so a lot of fun when pushed.
Any pics of the 135 bud?? Really fancy one myself, also what state of tune to get to 400 bhp??

They are great cars, and the earlier N54 twin-turbo versions are little less refined in their power delivery, which I prefer. As I say, comes on boost aggressively, much like a Cossie.

Mods wise, they go to 420bhp really easily. All you need is an uprated intercooler, downpipes/primary de-cats and a remap. Mine has a JB4, which is a piggyback style ECU that gives adjustable boost settings whilst on the move. Great bit of kit. It made 413bhp last time on the dyno with 500lb ft of torque, but it was a little unhealthy then! Running a lot better now as, just like a Cossie, these cars can be temperamental things. Items like coils, plugs, fuel pump and injectors have to be in top condition or replaced to run a bit of serious boost/power through them.

I commute 1300 miles a month in mine and it averages 34mpg during the week if I'm really careful. At the weekends it goes down to 20 or so.

I left it looking standard, though I was going to fit a set of wheels but the 135i uses a high/rare offset, so it's quite tricky to find many.

They do drive nicely, steering is well weighted and brakes are six-pot Brembos with 338mm discs as standard, so stops very well. Even the electronic LSD works better than you think it would, though I've got a plated LSD from an E92 M3 to go in.

Yeh typical BMW balance really not keen on m3 or m5s but these are a touch rough around the edges which imo makes them a better driving experience as they dont feel so soft executive

Yes really liking that, defo my next car I think, who do you use to tune yours or do you do it all yourself?? I used to use Nigel Mosley @ Mosely Motorsport for my E30 M3s etc but he has retired now, does Stu @ MSD tune them iirc??

Great car you have there buddy

Thanks mate

I love it. It's by far the best balance of practical performance I've come across. Prices are getting quite cheap lately I've noticed too. Can pick up a decent one for Ł13,000 now I reckon.

Tuning wise, the JB4 comes preset with maps. All you do is fit and forget and have power levels to choose from. Mine is 310bhp, 400bhp and 420+bhp, which you change using the original steering wheel controls. You can get the ECU mapped (MSD offer one) but I prefer using the JB4.

Agree, for a standard car, the 1M is a bit of an animal in the way it puts down its power. Great cars.

You had a very nice Sapphire, I am wondering what it was about it that you no longer enjoyed ? Did you have lots of problems with it, cost to much to maintain or it didnt drive very easily?
Is the M3 your daily driver now as I presume you didnt like most of us, use the Sapphire as your every day car?
This thread has had a lot of people saying they now have BMWs and as an everyday car you cant compare it to an old technology Sapphire, it is a mass produced vehicle which is designed to be easy to drive, reliable and still have good performance.
For a lot of people it will be an ideal car but personally I dont think it will ever be as special as your Sapphire was.

Don't think any modern bmw will have the special factor like a Cossie will but I can see why people move on. The price on cossies and the parts is starting to take the enjoyment out of them. I havnt used mine for 5 years due to a restoration and now it's almost finished its fighting me all the way and still costing me a fortune, I too will be breaking it or selling complete and getting something more modern and less hassle before long.

I would find it hard to sell my saff too. I still love it after 9 years of ownership. I've never owned a car as long.

Right now my Saph is out of the garage for the first time in 2 years as I am doing some work on the garage. Looks Bad ass standing there in the driveway when I get home from work

It's finally moving in again this weekend, ready to get stripped and rebuilt once again.

Owned it for 10 years now and can't imagine selling it.

I sold my saff about three years ago and have since had an E90 alpina, then an E46 m3, then an evo 8mr and now guess what..I'm back to a cossie, for a car to bring out on a sunny day and tinker with nothing beats them.

It's like saying the Saff was too common and modern in the 80s when people where wondering why you replaced your lotus cortina with one!

Technology moves on and the majority will with it, some people will keep the older cars on the road but to dismiss cars cos they are new and therefore inferior to classics is just narrow minded.

In 30 years I'll probably look back and wish I owned a mint low mileage classic like a 135i or focus Rs mk3

Having the cossie was a great time, a good 10 years but like everything people change and move on . I found I was the only one left with one and then it becomes a little pointless .

If your in a group of mates who have similar cars then its always going to be a laugh .

Most are tucked away now as to many people USE the increase in value brush when really they need to be used and enjoyed, a parked up cossie will end up costing you money . I wouldn't go and get a new car and lock it away for 30 years to make money .

In fact the money I spent on the cossie could have got me a noble M12 , which is a awesome toy .

As someone else mentioned Ford Fair . it should be called ST fair .

I wanted a good all round car , a few somple mods and Ł600 will see a good 453 Bhp .

As I said for a lot of people the M3 will be an ideal car, if I wanted a newer car which can be used every day with probably no problems I can see its appeal . I have not said its inferior to a Sapphire but just personally I still prefer mine.
I owned a Lotus Cortina back in 1981 which I sold very cheaply as there were still quite a few around then and bought a Uren 1600e Cortina Savage.

I've hardly used mine saff. Since January I think I've been in it 5 times. The only reason is cause before I moved house I used the cossie for work but at the mo I live 2 mins away from work so I have rather used my bike or the Puma.

Hopefully when I move again I will start to use the cossie more. Yeh it's a old car but I enjoy driving it.
