A lot of people believe that life is just a test of faith.
If you can still believe and are a good honorable person despite all the shit that gets thrown at you, then you deserve your place in heven.

IMO your right Joe, they are nice stories.
But religon gives something for people to believe in, and also teaches basic moral values for which people can live by.
And that is what I believe religion is all about.
I like to think there is a God out there.
But conversly, a lot of bad things have been done in the name of religion by people who are willing to exploit peoples faith.
Double edged sword.

....everyone whos good, or nice...either gets nailed to planks of wood on a hill....or dies in a freak factory accident....(maybe not the latter)
Very sad though, but his faith is such that he's not afraid of death....so maybe its not as sad to him, as to us.....if he doesn't fear it....and he's been in prolonged and severe pain...it's not as harsh as it could have been </muse over life>

feelings aside, i think the whole incident is hypocritical, one rule for one, another for someone else...
did you know that the catholic church, an the pope himself condemned the turning off of that brain dead womain in america? y'know, the one whos parent wanted her to carry on being fed but husband said let her die? shes been in a vegitative state for 15 years.
they say all life is savred and should not be allowed to die.
ok, so how come its wrong to let a brain dead vegetable die by stopping her life support, but its ok to no treat the pope ailments and let him die in peace?
MASSIVE doublestandard imho
ps i'm not religious, and i believe he should do what he wants (ie if he wants to stop treatment, let him) but i think his stance on the other issue was totally out of order.

I personally think that he was right....stopping the feeding to that lady starved her to death....which wasn't her choice....at least the pope could chose not to recieve treatment.... but obviously a touchy subject...rest in peace anyway...

katie, without intervention from medical science she would have and did die.
that is not "natural life" but is the opinion of the catholic church that this is wrong.
well, the pope can be made to live with the intervention of medical science, if he refuses it, then he's going against the beliefs of the catholic church.
spose its situations like this which will make catholics think "oh shit, maybe we are being a bit fucking silly"
