depends how much you want to spend. retail money you have choice from all sorts of places at £100 or more for something with 1080p and GPS.

Going on ebay or amazon, tons of choice from china. £40-80 will get you something good. However often lots of different versions from different factories and sellers, so once you find a model you like, google it for reviews and choose the seller who sells the ones with good reviews.

after reading loads of stuff on piston heads im going for a mini 0805. but the general rule seems be carefull buying via ebay as loads of fakes or rebaged old models.

cant remember the seller online recommended will have a look later when on my home pc. but the 0805 was £87 with a hardwire kit and gps mount.

updated with a link http://www.combi.org.uk/products/50/2015-Mini-0805-%280803-Upgrade%29-GPS-Amberalla-A7LA50-WDR-1296P-&-LDWS

Have a watch of Techmoan on YouTube mate.

He's tested loads and shows footage day and night, shows features etc.

And surprisingly the cheaper ones do a far better job of recording HD both day and night.

G1W dash cam, about £35.

You can get a hard wire kit and set it to stay on for a certain time when you turn the car off and auto start as well to save plugging it in all the time.

I bought a chinese one for £15 inc delivery. 1080p. Works awesome at night and supports upto 32GB.

If it gets stolen or packs up i'll just buy another.

Service engineer by trade so its a no brainer for me with all the arse's on the roads.

Funny this topic should come up, i purchased one my self a few days ago after debating one for a long time. Think they are a good idea but also in the back of my mind i feel like i am going to curse my self by having one. (if that makes sense)

Also think it will make you think twice about how you drive too knowing that you too are being recorded.

You don't want a spy so turn off the GPS. You can't judge speed on them. Even doing 20mpg the playback looks like your doing 50 odd.

But if you fuck up format the card.

As this man says, Techmoan is a great place to start and it was on his recommendation I got a Mini 0801 which I've since upgraded to a Mini 0803.

I can't recommend this little dashcam enough, it's a great budget buy and has a small LCD screen which is handy for setting up your initial positioning and also for reviewing your clips in situ without having to download to a PC or laptop. Quality is great too.

The footage on it is spot on both day and night.

Don't worry about IR features for night. It reflects on the front window so it's useless.

I'll be getting 2 of them. One for the car and one for work in the truck.

It's great value! I paid £56.99 for the 0803 (no GPS or internal memory) and £13.49 for a 32GB Samsung class 6 micro SDHC card plus £7.99 delivery from Amazon, so £78.47 all in to get the camera up and running.

I hard-wired my camera in as my accessory sockets are permanent live and I wanted switched live, but you can have them permanent live and set for movement detection if you want.

I tried a couple and shite.

Phone over heated and lost more battery power than the charger could supply.
And cocked up when you get an email, text or call.

And limited storage!

Better to buy for purpose in this case.

You could maybe stick it to a thin piece of metal and slide into the head lining?

The mount is ok, mine's tucked up behind the rear view mirror. I'll get a picture tomorrow in the daylight.

My old man had a silent witness and it looks superb. GPS is good too. They have some nice software which shows G, speed, location etc. You can also edit the footage to remove patches of film where you may actually incriminate your self.

Got the number plate of a car which smashed his mirror off and the footage was good enough to submit to police when a speeding police car (not trained traffic) over took a car on a blind bend, crossing a zebra crossing and forcing the old man onto a pavement to avoid collision all with no blue lights on (curb vs 20inch alloys = ), was pretty scary stuff to watch actually.

I will be getting something for the bike this summer however I'm not sure I want anything with speed/gps and will probably go for a Sony HDR if they have good enough helmet mounts. I have a feeling that recording speed may not actually be in my best interest full stop on the bike etc.

The first thing they asked my girlfriend when she called to claim was "do you have a camera", says a lot really. I'm sure any of the decent brands will be more than good enough.

Good for him, if they are reasonable money and you can sort a PF discount/group buy I'll happily buy one or two.

You want a defence.

Not judge, jury and executioner.

So don't use the GPS. As 1mph over the limit proves you guilty of one thing already.

You can't judge speed on a wide angled lense. Use it for your defence. Not your conviction!

Been thinking of getting one for my work van, seeing as it does loads more miles than my car. Partly for the "crash for cash" scams (had a customer recently that suffered one of these) but also just to catch the stupidity and idiocy I encounter on a daily basis on our roads

Not looking to spend a lot, so looking at this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301042725960 and then whack in a cheap 32gb card and just let it record all day and overwrite itself
