Who wants to go fast - VMAX200 2015
Just received the following email from Craig -founder of Vmax200.
Will have new venues including one in Wales- just checked it out 1.42 miles long so rather short for record attempts.
Pendine Sands is 5 miles long but have no idea how much can be used.
If its all the 5 miles Mark will have a heart attack as he knows I would give it a bash.
It would be my dream to enter a Ford team to one of these events or even a PF team. Please Please Please make this happen
.
Just reading the e-mail has made me feel 10 years younger
Dear All,
Next week we will be releasing all our 2015 Vmax200 dates and we’re thrilled to include some exciting additions to the event this year, as well as a relaunch of our new Vmax200 website.
Along with a number of days at Bruntingthorpe, the home of Vmax, we will be undertaking two breath-taking events in Wales over the course of our ‘Destination: Wales’ weekend event in July. ‘Vmax Taranis’ will see all types of sportscars race the runway on a silky smooth strip of tarmac normally reserved for drone landings and on the short list to be the new Spaceport. The following day in a Vmax exclusive, we will have the opportunity to hit the venue for numerous Landspeed records, The 5 mile long Pendine Sands for our new event ‘Vmax Landspeed’.
Places are on a first come first served basis as always so please get in touch to reserve for one or more events.

Fuck me one is coming to Wales! They don't allow spectators though do they?

In theory No but ive never seen anyone stopped. They didn't announce the dates in public so 'pit crew' became the byword for getting in. If they announce the dates they will have to enforce the no spectator safety rule. Not sure how they will do that but they will be forced to do do so.

I will have a chat with one of my good buddies and see if he will let us bring something interesting along, nothing ford but he has some awesome kit...this is not Flemke with the Macs but he does have access to his cars as well.

Just google map'd pendine sands, thats gotta be a bit hairy on the sand.
I can see what looks like some long straight tracks near by, but they look single track and sand/dirt too.
I see the 'Museum of speed' is there though!

Wouldn't fancy going to fast at pending on the sand! Great mind that it's held in pendine I'd love to go for a look.
Rod, would be great to see some fords there or even a Cosworth! I'd love to see a ford gt at one of these events like the modified ones in the us, show these datsuns how to do 300mph in a mile.

I don't know the whole story but I think this is a new venture for Craig.
It was a very much who you knew toffs day out before . The 5th gear run got my car noticed & accepted but I only ran once & had a problem.
It says first come first served in the e-mail so I suggest that its different now.

At the start you can see what the quoted Topspeed figures are & what they reached down Brunters. Totally different ballgame .
Its interesting to note an old Ford would have been 2nd on that video as far back as 2006 . The winning car had 1350bhp & is on a different planet. I must get my car there.

I have no idea. Not thinking of my car running any when soon would like to see other Cossies have a bash against these supercars. You don't have to win or run 200mph it will prove your car has the Power that your Tuner claims. I can tell you already what can be achieved.
400bhp - 170mph
500bhp - 180mph
600bhp - 190mph
710bhp - 200mph
850bhp - 210mph
Run 180mph & you will be in the Top 15 fastest Cossies there has ever been.
If you have another type of Ford maybe you can set a best of breed record. Where are all those 180mph Foci. I see massive Power quoted in the mags but no runs to prove it maybe you can be the first.

So you think I will just turn up & run Stevie the one think you must agree with is I will look at all the angles & when I have done that will look at them all again. I didn't know Pendine still existed but several events are run there not sure over what distance. Im sure Craig will have it all sussed out & let us know as soon as he can,

TBH, I think it's bloody stupid running any high speed distance event for road cars over such a distance, even it was the best super smooth asphalt surface you could find.
Few will have the aero designed for such work, and none will have tyres developed for such work...unless the cars are relatively slow in the first place.
About the only sort of car that would have suitable tyres...would be the likes of a Veyron where the tyres were specifically developed for the car and speeds it can do.
It would be very different pushing a tyre well beyond it's design speed/loading for a few seconds over say a mile distance...but 2, 3, 4 miles ? Nope, it's getting silly at that point.
Each to their own...but I'd say it's a bad idea to even contemplate such a distance if it's cars capable of 200+ that were never designed for it

Just cause its 5 miles long doesn't mean they'll use it all, doubt any car would last going that distance at full throttle. Its been used plenty of times by top gear so there's bound to be sections which are pretty good and useable.

Steve has a thing about running more than 1 mile. You wont change that.
On a personal level Mark has set a limit of how long we can be at 100% WOT so im limited to sub 2 miles at my Power level. My car wont be finished to take part anyway but I am interested in the distance allowed.

Pendine is hard sand but the tide comes in and out, not fully in but enough to make it damp and slippery. Iv been there many times as it's fairly local to me. There's plenty of room if u do make a mistake but it's very slippery. Top gear use it for messing around on, they never use it for any high speed stuff. Guy Martin used it recently for his push bike world record of 100mph and he found that had bad traction!
As for the sand getting every where, I'm sure iv still got sand on my Capri from 13 years ago when I was down there!

Yes, last time I was at brunters I covered the front of my 911 in masking tape as the stones were a nightmare. The tape was shredded in places at the end of the day.

Go on Martin, have one last crack at the top speed! God I wish my health was on my side, I'd love a crack at this top speed stuff.

YOLO as the the cool kids say!!
I would love to have something quick enough to try it. Doubt my 94PS Fiesta TDCI would break any records

Ye same here, don't think a pile of crap fiesta 1.4 is the sort of thing they want to see running.

2, 3, maybe 4 in something like a fairly standard Lambo, Porsche probably isnt something of huge concern as they were designed with that.
But cars with huge amounts of power over standard, potential for well over 200+ when the tyres arent really designed for such work, is a risk. And a fairly large risk at that
But I do feel 1 mile is a good distance, maybe pushing to 1.5 miles. At least it's giving some sort of realistic distance for a car to achieve it's top speed in.
If you drag it out to 2, 3, 4, 5 etc...may as well only pick days with the wind behind you and down a steep hill too.

Not at all, but 5 miles would be mental in highly modified cars

For me it would be a build up to 150mph then allow about 20 to 30seconds at the very max of full power to see what it does,
That's based on building a car to support such a task with all the bits needed,
My worry would be whats the car going to do at 225mph+I have done 210mph and its deff moving around a touch to much lol.

You are right it will be a struggle to get a safe tyre to be able to run for so long,

We only need 212/214 & that's possible in 1.5 miles with 900bhp. You are the only one to explore past 202mph & at that speed I felt in control at least until I put the brakes on then it moved like hell . It does worry me that beyond 202 it will require a better pilot than myself. Frank Sinatra made several come backs you know .
