Default MK6 escort 1.4 won't start???

Hi all.

We've got a mk6 escort 1.4 and it just wont start. We picked it up yesterday as a non runner, with in 1 hour of getting it of the tralier it started and run fine, it ran for a good 30min's arfter with i turn it off, after a nother 30mins it starte back up fine and ran a treat. But after 10mins it started to miss fire, and sience then it just does not want to start. There is no sound of petrol pump running, and also no spark at the plugs, the fuses have all been cheked and are all good, the pump relay has been changed, and we know the the relay is a good one and works fine, but no spark and no fuel. Have tryed using a different ecu ( one of a mk2 xr4i) and still wont start.

Can any body help as i have no idea???????????????????????????

cheers all

Does it have PATS? is it cranking?

Turn ignition on, watch the red LED by the clock. It should come on solid then go out. If it blinks at you quickly it is an immobiliser problem.

I'd have a guess at it being a pump problem, check for voltage there when you turn ignition on, then while cranking.

Don't know if its got pats, but there is a little light under the clock between the two buttons, but don't light up at all. It will crank over fine just won't fire up!!!

Cheers dude.

That sounds like the PATS. Is there a red or blue chip in the key? Check the basics first then maybe get the fuse box out and check it for corrosion / damp etc, pretty common on these.

Check voltage at the pump with a multimeter when you turn the ignition on and then while cranking. It should have 12v for a second or two after turning ign on, then all the time whilst cranking.

check the fuse box!! i had mk6 si brought it as a non runner (suspected fuel pump) turned out the connections in the fuse box had started to break down!!!

Caused all kinds of random issues, would run fine then would just start misfiring intermittently, wouldn't start when hot either, clocks would work when they wanted to

I would suspect a electrical issue bud, as richie has also pointed out it could also be to do with the pats,

But my mk6 had the same sort of issues as yours, i believe you can change the fuse boxes, but i never got round to it with mine

Fuse box will just drop down. Disconnect all the plugs from the top of it. there maybe a red cable held in with a 10m bolt if the same as my rs2000.

Pull fuse box out. You can open it up. Id dry it out, then spray with contact spray or heard wd40 does the job. Put it back in and try it.

Probably a hold in the scuttle letting in water. Was in mine

also another area to investigate if all else fails, tilt lower base seat up and check wiring plug to fuel pump could have a dirty connection or even a faulty wire, and look at fuel shut off switch in drivers kickpanel, all are worth a try

Id definitely say start at the fuse box as they are know to be a problem on the mk5 & 6.
Lift the bonnet and run you hand under the windscreen, no doubt you'll find rusty holes!

I you do when you put your fuse box back in put a bag over it to keep it dry
