Locking nuts really aren't hard to get off though!! Infact with the right socket it is almost as easy to get them off as it is with the proper key!
Obviously the motion sensors are not very sensitive, but then they never are on standard cars!
At a guess the put some bricks or something under the suspension to hold it up and let the tyres down so the wheels were then free enough to remove without triggering the tilt sensor on the alarm which jacking it up would do.

the picture in the paper shows the thief left a jack holding the car up....
its an old fashioned screw/wind up jack, just left there supporting the whole car, probably damaged the sill too, as the car weighs 2 ton.
probably let the tyres down too, by ripping the valve pin out, like they do at tyre centres for a quick deflate...
could have been a piss take tho, as only 2 wheels were taken.

Be under no mis-understanding.
1st: It was the first CLS in the country, so Merc will simply GIVE him some new ones.
2nd : He will be in the process of finding these people and having his people have a quiet word! You dont get to be a billionaire without meeting some "colourfull" individuals along the way
