Default brake issue on xr3i

since im nearly close to getting the car on the road i have one last problem with it im hopeing someone can advise on if possible

when the brake pedal is depressed it goes nearly all the way to floor before it starts to brake the wheels

i appriciate its 30 yrs old and i have just cleaned out all the brake fluid and replaced and bled the brakes as was told the brake fluid may be the problem (it was black lol) this hasnt solved the problem its still the same

its had all new brake pads and wondered is this normal on old cars or could a part need replacing as it does stop but just seem right to me

also it did pass the mot last yr with the brakes like this so must be good enough to pass the brake test

any help or advise would be great thanks

phil

Clamp off each brake hose and see which one makes the pedal travel shorten.
Do this stationary, NOT whilst driving

As Martin said also did you bleed the brake with the compensator open or closed

i basically shringed out the old fluid from the resevoir topped up then got the missus to depress the brake pedal half way and i bled out the old fluid then shut drain plug and repeated till new clean fluid was present

but the pedal to the floor issue existed before doing the fluid change so its no different

also i have checked calipers and both move easily

Are the rear brakes correctly adjusted? As said above clamp the hoses.

If you have 4 hose clamps, clamp all the hoses if the pedal goes solid remove the clamps from the hoses one at a time, each time testing the pedal pressure, as soon as it goes soft you know which corner the issue is at.

If the pedal isn't solid with all the hoses clamped then the master cylinder is probably knackered.
