I was told hammerite would be fine so used it and it was!
I gave it a clean with white spirit after the wire wheel obviously!

Any acrylic (Edit: epic fail aerosol / acrylic) rattle can paint is cool. The block believe it or not doesn't get that hot. Its always good measure to put a primer underneath.

Mate of mine rattle can'd his block in white to be fair it stayed white for quite a while.

White spirit is no good for any paint other than the stuff you do your skirting boards with!

Paint wise, I've used Halfords, yes Halfords own high temp engine enamel for years. Really good hardwearing stuff and you can get a good finish with a fine brush.

For an engine I do the final de-grease with aerosol brake cleaner as it is easist. Better still is panel wipe but it is tricky to use on an engine.

Still looked good when the block was scrapped yeah lol just a bit oily.
I used the white spirit to clean the dirt/dust off then left to dry and then painted. Seemed to work fine!

Here's mine. Degreased several times with industrial cleaner then jetwashed.

Few coats of simmonz engine enamel gave me these results
