I would say it depends what base you are starting from. Some cars handle brilliantly out the box and can handle ALL the power they have very very well (Clios, DC2 Teg, Elise) whereas some don't. If you had any given track and you had the same car but you done one lap in a version purely with more power and one with purely handling modifications, unless it was a cruise ship, I'd put my money on the more powerful car doing a better lap time. Both need to be done in tandem though in my opinion and generally, you can't go wrong doing both together sensibly. I mean who ups the power of a car 50% and leaves it on standard suspension and tyres and takes it on a track day? Unless you've really got 1 or 10 screws missing.

yeh but you would last longer without oxygen lol. .... edit oops i meant water
i think you missed the point though really. for you id assume your a power man with 500bhp in a sierra? its not a car renowned for corners.
now if you were hill climbing in a small light hatch or elise, vx220 id assume your a handling man.
in my head i just wondered what peoples thinking was whether they are grip biased or power biased. seems a simple question to me.? maybe my brain is on another planet to you lol

Power,
i ran over 500bhp in a "standard" 2wd saff chassis
had konis, and T1R`s on STD rims otherwise nothing else done
never had any issues (oh and silkolene SKF brake fluid)
no issues

Did anyone watch that 5th gear program when they had the lass who comentates for F1 in the clio. They put a blue fin on the car then an exhaust did a few laps. Then put proper tyres on the car and did a few laps. They they put the car back to standard and then Jason Plato went out with the bird and showed her the racing lines and she knocked loads of time of her first few laps.

Depends what track and depends what sort of driving you want to do with it.
Handling will help your lap times more at most places that power will though, having power to get upto speed isnt much use if you have to keep going massively slow round the bends.
That said, if you are doing trackdays in a well handling but slow car its annoying as they only let you over take on the straights not the bends, and you wont have the power to do so, which means you are relying on other people to notice you and back off and let you past, which wont happen often as most people on trackdays are idiots!

Broadly speaking for laptimes I would say its a case of:
Talent > Handling > Power
I know people who are a couple of seconds a lap quicker than me in the same car, so more talent would do me a lot more good than more power or better handling, but its harder to buy talent so Im stuck with having to make the car better instead, lol, lessons help but can only take you so far, and if like me you are an "ok" driver only in terms of natural talent, you wont ever match someone with a real gift, same as playing the piano or anything else.

But again, handling refers to the feel, not the actual ability to go around corners.
A classic Mini may handle very very well....but does it actually go that fast ?
Handling is fun, well balanced, safe etc. Not necessarily fast around a corner.

It isnt a Placebo, nobody says they're fast. But they do handle well, and they are fun.
In order to go consistently fast, you need power, good grip and good handling.

For a trackday, handling of course.
For the road, its a tough one, but if we talking fucking mental fast, then power wins. If we just talking ok, then handling.
But while everybody thinks they're shithot drivers, most people with fast cars cant drive for shit, be it straight line or corners, thats pretty clear to see, so for most driver tuition will be better than both.

i think you missed the point though really. for you id assume your a power man with 500bhp in a sierra? its not a car renowned for corners.
It's actually 590 bhp, in it's standard form it's not the best round corners but mine is hardly standard
now if you were hill climbing in a small light hatch or elise, vx220 id assume your a handling man.
The fact that I hillclimb my Sierra has got bugger all to do with whether I prefer power or handling it's the only car available to me, if I had the money i'd be in a single seater with 800bhp and handling we could only dream of!
in my head i just wondered what peoples thinking was whether they are grip biased or power biased. seems a simple question to me.? maybe my brain is on another planet to you lol
Like I said if you have a race car you don't compromise you have plenty of both, and even if you don't why choose one or the other?? Makes no sense to me.

But the debate was supposed to be just a daydream discussion not reality really. i struggled to get this across so iv give up now.

Handling is first and power is second. Because Power is nothing without control. Also you might have the best handling , most powerful car but you still need to know how to use it.

lol , it shouldn't , I think the discussions probably gone a bit off topic .
Its far easier to "over power " a poor chassis than "over handle " an under powered car .
Pound for pound tho , which is essentially what this is all about , you get a btter return ( initially ) from Handling and braking than turning the wick up ,that can come later .
Cars with less power than grip are much easier to drive on the limits , you can really ruin a car by giving it too much power , in my experience with Sierra in particular ive advised more people to Reduce their power than up it ,most reduce lap times accordingly .
If you start with a fast car in the first place you'll have an easier job improving it .
In answer to the " what car " did I drive round coombe , a sierra Race car .
