Default plugs - discuss

are manufacturer recommended plugs the best plugs for your motor or are there better ones out there?

i'm not on about modified cars, just standard set ups?

and not them super duper uber plugs that cost a million pounds each, something that you could be comparable in price to what you were going to fit from the dealer?

I always rate normal NGK plugs. Always used them on my own cars.

We use depending on model both Champion and NGK on Hyundais at work, get the odd one come back after service with a misfire, always fitted with Champion shite.

for a bog standard car, the heat range of the standard fittment plugs are designed with the engine while mapping.

i have just fitted a set of Irridium plugs in my 1.8CVh and it does drive better, but are they better than the origionals......... who knows as there are far too many variables like timing belt slop, worn out hydraulic lifters, worn shims, that will all make a difference long long before plugs will on a standard car!!

id be checking the resistance of the leads and primary/secondary condition on the coils/coilpacks before asking about "better" spark plugs.

it aint gonna make fuck all difference if the power getting to the plugs is wank, or something else in the engine isnt what it could/should be

IIRC most standard Ford 'motorcraft' branded plugs are NGK anyway?

the reason i ask is that with my plugs and leads being 7 years old, i'd rather refit the same or better if that's possible rather than paying twice for the same thing

everything else gets changed as regular as clockwork but these have just been missed off the list

not that there's anything wrong with them, i feel that it's just time to get them changed

Interesting.

I've not used NGK for years but in my old 1.6i orion they were recommended to me, it ran like shit on them, 2 sets later i put the old plugs back in and it ran spot on.

The recommended plugs are the ones that would of bin the ones bench tested in the factory not always the best plug,

I'd go with NGK

My Mondeo V6 had motorcraft plugs in for 8 years without any problems, and I was surprised when Ford service say they last 60K miles, but I changed mine around half that. I looked round at other makes, but went Motorcraft again as they got as good feedback as any others and they have been in 4 years and no problems. They are platinium ones as standard, so assume that why they last so long. Also at the time Motorcraft plugs where cheaper than NGK etc, so that also helped my decision.

I also changed my HT leads for Ford Racing red ones about 8 years ago, originals were still OK, but just fancied these high spec ones, and they are still working perfectly.

Then again have used NGK bog standard plugs in my sister's Fiesta MK3 for years no problems, I heard the rumours about Champion having issues, but OK when I used them, but just used NGK for years, just incase.

As said, 90% sure the modern Ford plugs just have blue stripes on them and are branded Motorcraft, but the codes on the base of the plug under the hexagon are NGK codes.

Always ran my Golfs on boggo NGK plugs, some of them have triple electrodes, but thats how they are nothing fancy, never a problem. Used to run NGK BCR8ES in the old RSTs in 90s, never a problem.

Platinum tip plugs for the longer service intervals, no performance advantage!

As a wise man said "you can't gain power by changing the plugs, you can only restore what's there"

I had a look at some genuine Ford plugs yesterday, they're Bosch not NGK
