I did nvq level 1 and got a distinction. I love welding but they don't do level 2 anywhere near where I live!

Teach yourself to weld a car, then you'll be able to weld thicker stuff.
I was taught to weld using 1.2 mig wire with amps of 110-120.
Try that on a car and holes galore from burn through as I'm used to being able to put lots of heat into the material in welding.
I'm quite handy with a stick welder & gas. But can't Tig

i love welding i at one point did it every day for work and im competant in mig tig ark and gas welding, i was coded in tig and mig welding but that has expired now no doubt, as sad as it sounds nothing gives me greater pleasure than sticking 2 pieces of metal together lol! mig is the most versatile of all welding you will do so concentrate on that
as ajc says learn on thin and thick will come naturally with time, it can be difficult to start on thick metal and go backwards to thin stuff. your welds above look fine too me. crack on and enjoy

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
I would love to learn how to weld. Is it a case of having the correct amp's for the type of metal thickness and having a decent wire feed?
Ive seen a few gas less welders, are these good for beginners?

avoid gas less if you can, most colleges will do a course that will be more than enough to get you started if not the mig welding forum (google search)~ is more than enough to get you started then its just practice practice practice! its a hell of a lot easier than you think!

you cant fix stupid
iv borrowed a welder and been doing a fair bit of practicing so i can put my cage in. i struggled most welding 3mm to 1mm as the heat needed for 3mm would burn 1mm. same thickness metals is easier and im ok on that now but its a hard sport to learn.
penetration is key

its easy doing it with nice clean metal, trying doing it on a rust bucket were you grind and grind trying to find something to weld to

I found mig was easy but arc very hard. At first as u git to get the arc going and keep it there and u have to do all the work feeding the electorde ect but I really enjoyed arc as I like a challenge I wana try tig and I wana learn how to use a plasma cutter

Only done lead welding with gas and air. Got good at it, but lucky for me I haven't had to do it for years as it's a long slow job as it can only be done at low heat compared to other metals.

i'm old enough to have learnt to weld with arc and gas as they hadn't invented mig back then
passed my courses and stuff but from what i can remember, arc was a bastard on anything but the thickest metals and gas was fairly easy
migged my car and what a ball ache that was to get right as the light meant i kept welding the wrong bit

Forget gasless, buy yourself a normal mig, and buy a pub co2 bottle from these guys, iirc it was Ł33 for the first bottle and 13 for every refil. The small bottles halfords sell are a waste of time

I was told they put something in it to spoil the weld as so many of them were getting stolen!!!!
I've got 2 huge bottles out the back I can't get rid of,but if their ok ill keep them?

That does look ok for a 1st timer, done some oxy accetyline welding in the past, found it a bit tricky to get hold of but I got there in the end, really want to get myself a mig, think its a great skill to learn, and the possibilities with projects cars becomes endless!

AC TIG for aluminium and magnesium, DC TIG for just about any other metal. Worthwhile equipment is very expensive and it's a lot harder to learn than mig or stick, but well worth it due to the versatility and superior weld quality.

I believe that argon is better for thin panel work but ive always done ok with co2

Buy a decent mig and you'll be able to run stainless wire through it if you need to weld or patch up anything stainless , you'd need a different liner and gas but cheaper than buying both if your struggling for cash .

For the likes of T45 roll cages/chassis, stainless/inconel/titanium exhausts and aluminium work, tig is the only way to go.

For the majority of welding on a car, especially panel work, you'll find mig much more useful. Unless the fit up on what you're welding is perfect, tig won't be much use to you.
