Any renault techs in? Megane 1.6 petrol wont start
 

Evening chap, a mate of mine has a 51 or 52 plate megane, its been off the road roughly 2 years and earlier this year they decided to sell it. It went for mot but failed on rear wheel bearing and front brake efficiency, so i stuck a new set of discs, pads and a rear bearing on for him and its remained sat outside his house for sale.

Now it didnt sell and he has decided to use it for work as his usual lift is no more, he charged the battery, used the car to take his lad to football sunday, about a mile and then drove home.
Went to take the car out for a good run yesterday afternoon ans the thing wouldnt start lol.

It turn over but wont fire, he had taken the plugs out tonight and im not sure if it was wd40 he sprayed everywhere or petrol on the plugs, they were quite wet so assuming petrol, but there was no spark.

I know these suffer from immobiliser issues, so is there a way around testing/ bypassing the immobiliser??

if the red light goes out when ignition is put on then immobiliser is ok and its prob resistance in the crank sensor.if you touch the plug or body of sensor it should start up as your grounding it and taking away the resistance.will require a new sensor but will get it going.see it all the time out on the road (rac patrol):king::king::king:

Very common the crank sensor problems on these, has this yr got the key or card

it has a key, the red light on the dash goes out when cranking, so could be the CPS.
where are they on these cars?

i did trace some wires to around the middle of the block on the gearbox end, but couldnt really get to it nor see it as it was a bit dark last night lol.

are the cps expensive/easy to change?

its just weird how he used it twice, then it wouldnt work!

Its on the top of the gear box there is a cut out any you can see the flywheel
Think its just two bolts if I remember cheap and very easy to change.
My sister had bother with hers.

Take the old one with you to make sure they give you the same one as there seems to be quite a variation on the connectors.

I've given up trying to do them at the roadside as I can never seem to get the correct type.

I think Renault revised them a couple of times and sell a plug to go with the sensor when you buy it from them. They did when I bought one a few years ago anyway. ;)

Ah bugger, wont have access to the car till tonight, so was gonna take a punt on the more expensive one lol.

the local euro car parts only has 2 possible sensors in stock, the other 3 are out of stock...

The one that's on the car is bound to be one of the 3 that's not in stock!! Sods law!!! :cry:

True, might have 30 mins to get it off, his mrs should be there but gotta pick the littleun up at 3:30.... time is ticking lol

Took litterally 5 mins to open bonnet, get tools and a whip it out!

So had time to come hom and make a brew before getting my daughter lol

I bet it wont be so easy putting it back on in the dark lol

Well, went and got one, they part matched it but didnt have any genuine ones so i took what they had.

Littleun fell asleep on the way home so i popped round gav's and nailed it on.

He got home just as i was about to shut the bonnet so went and got the keys....

It fired up straght away!

Thanks very much chaps, gav is quite pleased. Wile there i dipped the oil, its like fooking treacle lol, so i told him thats next weekends job lol

On the older megane they seem to suffer with dodgy relays/connections to the relay in the fusebox under the bonnet so quite often turning it over while giving them a good tap on top of the relays gets them going. No doubt the same dismal quality on the newer ones so another fault to put in the memory bank fudgemeister!!!

9 times out of 10 it's the crank sensors at fault when I get called out to them!

thanks again boys, got him out the shit anyhow. had a text to say it fired up straight away this morning and got him to work!

on another note while thinking about it, a guy round the corner has a 51 plate megane scenic.. that thing doesnt start easily, they often have to lock/unlock it a few times before it starts.

so that one does sound like the immobiliser??

ill pass on the crank sensor info to him just incase

Cheap fix done. Glad we could all help. Friends one sounds like maybe immobiliser module isn't unlocking or about to permanently fail

If it's got a single button remote, try pressing the button firmly as you turn the key in the ignition to start it. If it starts, it's probably the key at fault as they suffer with cracks in the circuit board which are difficult to see. ;-)

i think i may have the same problem as this??? trouble!!

basically -
car wouldn't start a few months ago and a guy changed the battery and worked fine for a while.

now i went to get in the car last week - turns over fine but won't kick in at all. came completely out the blue. literally will not start but turns over fine

it is a 1.4 megane dynamique petrol
key card ignition

any help would be appreciated????

Change the CPS, its £20odd and a piece of piss to change, then go from there if its not that.
