evo 10 v focus rs mk2

Right im after a wee bit of advice,

I'm after a new car and have narrowed it down to either a evo 10 fq 330 or a mk 2 focus rs, it will be a daily driver covering roughly 10,000 miles a year, fuel economy is important ish but at the same time they are both performance cars so im not expecting great mpg,

Im after peoples opinions on both cars, good or bad points and issues I need to b looking for when test driving!?

Cheers jay

Lambchop 27-05-2013 10:47 AM

I've never owned either but 2 friends with Evo 10's regretted changing older models for one.

IMO an Evo 9 is where it's at :)

gingeRS 27-05-2013 10:55 AM

The frs is a great daily. I agree with chop though the evo 9 is a far better looking car than the 10

Glenn_ 27-05-2013 10:56 AM

Go and road test them both and make your mind up.We all have differnet tastes.

Tev 27-05-2013 11:29 AM

Thanks all, keep the opinions coming, I have road tests booked for both cars

Carlos-Titx 27-05-2013 11:56 AM

I'd imagine the Evo will cost more imparts and servicing as well. But if you have kids or use the rear seats a lot then Evo will be better as a daily.

I have 2 kids but I'd go with an RS but I'm a sad act and prefer fords

Staffi 27-05-2013 12:18 PM

Evo is a great car Jay, BUT as an everyday car it will get pricey as service intervals are 3500-4000 iirc.

If it were me I'd be looking at other makes of cars for everyday use tbh.

mechanic28 27-05-2013 12:31 PM

what are the mk2 rs doing money wise?

rog 27-05-2013 12:33 PM

You could always buy a Focus St and move to Scotland, every car meet you go to you'll make hundreds of mates and lose your car in amonst the thousands of other ST's, fancy it?

Don't know enough about evo's, but I've been told the newer ones are not subject to the same service malarkey of the older generation cars, so for me I'd be getting the facts on that before I went any further.

Tev 27-05-2013 12:35 PM

Pete, the evo servicing is every 10, 000 miles, as for kids nope dont have any so practicality can go out the Window

Looks like the mk2 focus prices are creeping back up, looking about 20 grand for a good 1

Staffi 27-05-2013 12:37 PM

Didn't realise it was 10k intervals on the Ten Jay, i stand corrected.

I'd opt for the Ten then if it were me pal.

Focus looks better but isn't :-)

mechanic28 27-05-2013 12:39 PM

20k blimey!!

Straight_4_N/a 27-05-2013 12:39 PM

if you want a vovlo buy a proper one it will eat a focus rs.

as for which id get a evo 9.

Carlos-Titx 27-05-2013 01:18 PM

Lol at Volvo.

Do you say to couger owners "if you want Mazda buy a proper one?"

To be fair bud I would have said every 4000 wasn't until I seriously looked in to it

Chopshop85 27-05-2013 01:30 PM

MK 2 FRS, just for the sound they make. :top:

Fullflush 27-05-2013 01:58 PM

Evo 9 is your best bet, then an Evo 10 followed up by the mk2 frs.

Jay, 27-05-2013 02:58 PM

I would say a 9 But the frs will be a better daily and easier to run

Both are thirsty cars, if MPG is important (ish) you might be better looking at a quick diesel or performance cars with better MPG

neilscott83 27-05-2013 03:39 PM

I'd pay a bit more and get an e90 m3 better than both of them.

jameswrx 27-05-2013 04:01 PM

I think you'll find the timing chains on the ten weren't keen on the new service intervals! There is a better replacement chain for them though.

RS is ok, but I just couldn't splash that money. They look great from a distance, then you get up close and see the rusting cheap sliding calipers and the fake vents under the lights.

I've driven the RS and was quite impressed with the torque. I hate the dash and the fake carbon print stuff though. I've been out in one in the wet... Let's just say it reminded me why I love my 4wd turbo stuff.

Rudders666 28-05-2013 07:52 AM

Personally I saved myself 11 grand and bought an ST, it's now faster than an RS with a relatively small amount done/spent. Put it this way it's nowhere near 11 grand! It's personal preference I suppose. Although I'll be going back to ze Germans next year probably as I would quite like my mpg back. 23-24 (whilst exceptionally good fun) just isn't enough.

booner999 28-05-2013 05:49 PM

E60 M5
E60 535D M Sport
E90 M3
E90 335D M Sport, mapped.. would beat the Focus and Evo

Rudders666 28-05-2013 06:38 PM

You could technically map the focus or evo to counter that though. Bit nonsensical really. M5 obvious it has a hell of a lot more horses but the others don't

Shings 28-05-2013 07:06 PM

Jay

Tiffs mate sold his X and replaced it with an MK2 RS - if you like I can ask him for his honest opinion. As he's had both he'll prob be able to give you an unbiased opinion on both.

J

Shings 28-05-2013 07:15 PM

Oh and price wise - if you've got the lolly I bet they aint £20k as there are plenty about.

Robs Frst 29-05-2013 11:10 PM

Personally I would have the Evo 10.
Driven both and the evo snatches for me. Have 2 mates with 10 fq360's and they are lively once modified around 400bhp.

Tho there is alot to upgrade, diff pins, rods, fuel relays, ayc. Will be expensive to use daily.

Out of the box the best handling evo. IMO.

Evo 10 RS or 9GT are the ones to have.

UBster 30-05-2013 09:41 PM

Evo X, had mine for around 18 months now and just about to go to Lemans and the ring next month, think I've covered about 17k miles, suspension is compliant , 4wd in the British weather is top notch , dual clutch gearbox in traffic plus satnav, Bluetooth, DVD and cruise control make for a great daily driver.

After a remap to 375bhp I'm getting 22mpg in the daily commute and 28/30 on the motorway at 70

JOHNDQ 30-05-2013 10:18 PM

If you just want a daily driver then the X is a lot better choice really its a lot safer and has all the toys you need if you have the GSR. Ive had 2 IX's a FQ320 and a GT before the VII RS yes they are a lot more "raw" than the X but believe me the build and ride are s**t for road use then you had the 4.5k or 6months servicing which is a joke really!

TIFF 31-05-2013 10:33 AM

My Mate has had both the Evo X FQ360 and currently hs the MK2 FRS with the Mountune kit fitted.....

The EVO was driven VERY VERY hard and went through 4 engines and 2 turbos, spent most of the time in the Mitsi garage having it fixed under warrenty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.........
It was a nice car inside with the full Rockford Fosgate system ect, looks OK and went very very well, loads of grip ect ect.....

But, if you want one, MAKE SURE its under warrenty still...... just going from past experiences

Now for the FRS, he drives it just as hard and has not missed a beat, handles very well and looks awesome.....BUT the trim is very "Ford"....plastic everywhere ect.....not nice for what your driving imho....

Out the 2 he prefered the EVO but couldnt live with the hassle of its reliability........ He said the FRS is NEARLY as good..........

Take both out and see....each have there pros and cons....

Tev 31-05-2013 01:22 PM

Thanks tiff
