Default s1 coil-ignition probs updated 16-3-05

right peeps have been having loads o probs with the rs

i was trying to check to see if the coil/ignition is working

so i was advised to connect a lamp (bulb with 2 wire ) to the green wire to the coil and then to the negetive of the battery. when you crank the engine it should flash, but mine in on constantly when the ignition is on and when you try to crank the enging it gets flashes brighter but does not go on and off like a indicator would is this right or im i missing summit

cheers

No, it's not right. It should flash very fast on and off. If it is staying on then you have a problem.

Does the fuel pump start to pump when you crank it over? (this eliminated the distributor as the ECU will only trigger the fuel pump relay if it sees distributor pulses).

Check you have an earth on pin 2 and 14 of the ESC 2 (silver) ECU. Also check you have power to pin 13 on the same ECU.

I believe that post quote Ally posted is actually one I typed out absolutely ages ago for another lad with similar problems!!

As for checking for a good earth, switch your meter to ohms (lowest setting). If the meter has a buzzer, switch it on if it isn't automatic. Touch one test lead to one of the 2 earth pins and the other test lead to the battery negative with the ignition off. The reading should be as low as possible and the buzzer should buzz. If it doesn't buzz then you have no earth and the ECU isn't powering up. If you don't have a buzzer equipped meter then I would not like to se more than 0.100 of an ohm.

Another way of testing which is simpler and a bit more of a yes/no answer is use a test lamp with a bulb (not an LED test lamp as these are a stupid stupid invention ) and connect the crock clip to the positive battery terminal. Probe the 2 earth pins with the ignition off and the lamp should light up. If not then there is a fault.

Try the tests again with the ECU connected and the ignition on. The lamp should still light up. If it doesn't then the ECU is fighting to get an earth and the wires can't supply a good enough earth.

IIRC the earth point is at the wiper motor...could be wrong though.

I tell you what I have found on some Mk3 and 4 Escorts. The body to battery earth at the battery has gone high resistance which measures ok on the meter when the ignition is off but when the ignition is on, everything was fighting for an earth down this cable and the car wouldn't run.

A test lamp is a test lamp no matter what it is! The good thing to hear is it isn't an LED lest lamp.

right then

checked out the earth and got good earth to
lead beside battery
lead at wiper motor
to ecu

finally got sparks at the coil one of the wire to the coil was loose, but still no spark at the dizzy

tried the multi plug at the dizzy got good earth to the brown , but didn,t seem to be a power supply to the dizzy. multi plug on the dizzy has a + sign so though that must have a power source but no a thing, tried connecting a wire from the battery to the + but still nothing????

getting there slowly bu bodgingly
