Explain further please?

Sills replaced on both sides usually comes to £200 - 300?
Rear arches quoted £150 - £300
Wings £60 - £125
Floor pans - unknown
Underside - unknown
Engine bay £300 - £430
Bumpers £60 each - £110
Boot - unknown
Electrics - unknown
Respray full car £800 - £1500

Around £2k bar the unknowns?
I think these are realistic from a "any old garage getting my car through an MOT" sort of price. "Reputable" restorers work on exactly that, reputation, so they will take their time and do a good job. Plus with reputation comes demand and price.

I could see it costing you 5k+

Who has quoted you these prices? With those prices I cant even see materials being covered. You make out you want it restored to a high stand from a reputable company but then estimate £800-£1500 for paint come on?!?! I can only imagine the quality of the materials used for that sort if job. It frustrates me so many stating they paid £800-£1000 for a respray! Its a blow over nothing more!

Okay, granted these aren't the best pics i could come up with, it's the best i could do without my jacks and ramps at hand

Wing mirror needs re-sitting + respray

Botch up job to pass MOT, needs a new wing

Wing mirror needs replacing

Boot has NEVER been patched up, ever, whilst we've had it, so i don't know why those are there Also, there appears to be a leak in my boot!

Another view of hell. Any idea where the water can have come from?

Engine bay, looking it's worst. Whole thing needs to be stripped out to check for any repairs on shell

Tow handle at front, with the cover on needs replacing (it's stuck there with some cable ties) Needs a respray too.

I've had to move the bonnet holder to that pin, as the rubber from the other went walk-abouts and somehow everything went sideways...

Botch up job for MOT. Needs to be cut out and replaced. I think the guy who did it just primed over the rust!

Again, most likely primed over. Needs to be cut out and replaced. Dent in the door on the left of the pic, needs to be sorted too.

Same side as the botch up primer job. Clearly shows the uselessness of work carried out.

Rust kicking in under both rear lights

Another pic of lovely rust.

And again

And.... again

Cracks need repairing

Well lets be honest, it's not the worst passenger wing you've seen! (or is it?)

Passenger sill looking... good...

Driver side arch needs replacing

Sill, on the.... passenger side i'm guessing (forgot )

Driver side sill, needs cut off and replacing

Better view of it

Can't remember which side...

you really need to reconsider your plans for this, the amount of work required to get this car to a decent standard will run way past £5k if your wanting someone good to do this as a main job,

you'd be as well with a new shell, when you start cutting the rust out you wont be left with much. your goung to have to strip the engine and so on out for the engine bay resto and the running gear off for the underside resto. might as well just do the whole lot and have a good shell rather than a patchwork quilt of repair panels and filler.

I would want a good look at the "A" pillars, the rear chassis legs aswell before commiting to spend a lot of money on that motor.

But what happens when you've already chucked a few grand at it and realise you are still way short of finishing all of the jobs on your list? Will you carry on regardless or will reality kick in (hopefully before you get to that stage) and call it a day.

By the way mate how old are you (honest question not implying that you're young and naive)?

Look folks, i know you're all trying to be as helpful as possible, and truely i do appreciate it, but let's get one thing right.

I am NOT going to buy another car instead of repairing this one. I had that thought before, and it's in the bin.

However, considering how bad everyone is telling me the car is, i'm thinking of undertaking a welding course and work on it myself slowly.

I personally WANT to spend the money on a professional doing the job, but by the sounds of it, it'll cost over 10k?

Edit: I'm 22 going on 23, with a full time job.

Read my resto. Buy a mig, practice for a month and get to work. Also view this. It's inpirational. Honestly though, I would rent a space in a garage and get to work

Surely a wind up?
It's not like its even a special model but a standard looking FIVE DOOR escort si in scrap condition.
If your hell bent on doing it a reshell is the only option on that, you'd pick up a completely mint ghia x with every possible extra for £2000,a really tidy rs 2000 would be around the same,in fact there's a beauty in red in the for sale section.
No one in your family will thank you for doing it,it will take you years to get done and I can put money on it you'll give up and be in a worse place than you are now.
Take this from someone who's been there and done this, ended up costing me a fortune and never even completed what was a pretty crap car to start with.
The sleepless nights worrying about costs, how long it's taking and the general hassle are honestly not worth it.
Sorry to be so harsh but you'll thank us for the advice in the future.
Get something you can enjoy right here right now.
I had to make a really hard descision on my cossie as it turned out despite my best efforts the shell was too far gone.
I bought a mint second hand shell that's mot'ed,hasn't had any visible major welding and if kept in good order and on top of it will give me many years of pleasure.
Have a think about it mate.

I really don't get you lot. If the guy WANTS to restore this car what is the problem? Why should he not do it? Have none of you guys ever bought a new car for your daily ? 18k Focus, keep it 5 years, worth about 8k. 10 grand lost. If this bloke/lad loves this car and it costs him 6k the future value means SOD ALL! If it is worth 1k in 5 years, that is only 5k lost and he's been happy!

He's asked WHO someone recommends, not weather or not he should or shouldn't restore it!

It seems to be a thing in the car world. We all worry about future value of our hobby cars, yet throw money away on the dailys!

Totally agree with you it's his car his choice. I'm going to be spending money on an escort gti. It's needing sills floor pans rear arch repairs but its only 1 owner with 40k on it.
It's my money and I don't plan on selling it so what's the harm in him spending his hard earned on something he loves.

So the guy restores the car and spends £6k doing it, he then drives to a supermarket and some one accidently knocks into it, causes about £300 worth of damage and the insurance company will write it off.

I honestly think the reshell is the best idea with good replacement parts instead of things like trying to repair bumpers. The labour costs will be eaten up with things like repairing bumpers etc. Every one is just speaking from experience and trying to give SENSIBLE advice. Im sure if its a close family member who as maybe past away or something they will be screaming at you "put your hard earned savings into a property or something"

Good luck with what ever decision you come to.

But sometimes you have to get things out your system, no matter what other people are telling you.

We have all done it.

If I was the OP I'd spend £100 on a gas-less MIG and get stuck in. It'll go one of two ways...

Hey folks,

Just thought i'd clear up a few things and ask a simple question. I'm not crazy, i'm passionate. Passionate meaning i will do WHAT EVER it takes to bring this car back to factory standard. If some people cannot understand this passion, please refrain from posting and gossip amongst yourselves. I'm seeking help, which is what i thought this forum was about. Not being told i'm crazy / insane / stupid.

If you had a kid, who was disabled, would you abandon them when they're at their worst, and try having another kid... or would you nurture and look after the kid for as long as you possibly can?

It's like asking me to dump a large piece of my heart and saying get a transplant.

To everyone giving me advice on the matter, without slandering me, i respect you a lot. You're looking out for me, and giving me the reality of the issue. However, as stated before, i won't be looking to replace it. Once again, lots of respect to everyone who is trying to help me.

EscortNut, i'm very thankful for you posting that link. I'm contemplating it at this moment in time, but i'm still 70-30 on a resto using the shell i have.

Also, thank you for the links everyone is posting. I'm contacting / reviewing each one, and i have appointments set with a few people.

Once again, i'm still looking for more input, i have been turned away by quite a few people.

Once again, thank you all a million times over.

Regards

Sunny
