Oil level hot and cold
The Mrs' has just got a 1 year old VW Polo and it was serviced at the main dealer just before we picked it up. The oil level on the dipstick is reading well over the maximum so I emailed the dealership to let them know and ask is the catalytic converter covered under warranty in case we have problems? I was gonna try and syringe a bit out myself but I wanted a written record of this issue I case the Cat does get clogged up. They replied saying check the oil hot. I understand that the dipstick has been calibrated for hot on some cars and cold on others, but due to thermal expansion wouldn't the oil level read higher once hot?
Thanks

Cheers for the replies. I wanted to send them a bit of an arsey reply but just wanted to check if people agreed that the oil should probably read higher when hot due to expansion?

As above, check when cold, surely that is the standard practice. When it is warm it will only go up!
Check what it says in the owners handbook just to confirm. I wouldn't go messing about with it or if anything goes wrong then they will just deny any responsibility. I'd be contacting them first thing in the morning to get someone out to sort it as too much oil can do just as much damage as not enough!
