Daily car for under 3K
Hi guys, thinking of selling my mondeo st tdci to free up bit of cash as im getting married next year. also im only doing 12 mile round trip each day to an from work so dont really need a diesel.
Still want something thats reasonably nippy, but not silly on tax and insurance.
So far im thinking of the following cars:
Seat Leon cupra
Skoda Octavia VRS
BMW E46 320/325/330
Saab 93 Aero 2.0 Turbo
Clio Sport 182
Mondeo ST200 (Old but do like the look of them)
Whats people's opinions, and also anyone got any other suggestions?
Cheers
Ben

Volvo C70 2.3 T5, can be had for a grand and will scare M3 owners!
Tax is same as any car of that age, insurance cheap for what they are

I know exactly what your saying as I'm looking for another car at the moment. Been reading up on them and they do seem good value for money, if you can live with the badge snobbery. There's a 161k mile in the for sale section, but not sure if I could live with something that high. Nice car though ....

its actually my car for sale in the classifieds on here, i'm sure you'll think i'm biased but the VRS's are brilliant
go and drive one and you'll see what all the fuss is about, they do everything so well and are very good on fuel.
I'm only selling it as i've got a e30 bmw ive put back on the road, otherwise i wouldnt change it for anything. As said, the boots are huge

The more turbos,more fun!
Im selling my Lemon Yellow 53 Skoda Octavia Vrs with full skoda service history and 103k on the clock.
Cracking car, only selling it because its to clean and nice for what i want to use it for on the track so going to buy one thats not as tidy as this one.

I got an Octavia VRS last year, standard car, I've always liked the look of them and needed a runner, as first I found it a bit bland, mainly because I just get in it and drive it, but it drives very well and is comfortable, as said, massive boot, nice trim, good looks as standard and with VAG build quality and reliability.
If you wanted a bit more fun then an exhaust, filter and map really brings them to life.

if your all mature and sensible but want a little poke a citroen C4 is a decent shout.
Get the VTS HDi coupe model,140bhp diesel. They do 50+mpg and remap safely well up to 170/180bhp.
The 16v HDi is a properly good engine, and the car is really comfy, easy to drive and well built.
Older models/higher milage models are cheaper than 3K these days. Ive driven them and am always surprised by how good they are.
There are other faster cars you can buy, but as an all rounder, its a tough one to beat. 3K would buy you an 06plate car with 60,000k or so on it if you look about. same performance as an STtdci really.

Are they that bad then?
I quite fancy a scoob, be it a classic from t reg shape, or a blob eye, but i cant afford an sti blob and seen that on pistonheads earlier and quite liked it. Agreed the rear lights are gash but the rest aint tooo bad.
I do a 20 mile round trip to work and back every day, and thats all my car would be used for as we have the cmax for family shit
I like white at the mo too lol.
The puma i have does about 30mpg so id want something similar, needs 4 door the throw the kids in the back and a reasonable boot - all of which the puma doesnt have unfortunately as other than the size, its a cracker..
I showed the missus matts skoda he has for sale.. As i dont mind them. But computer says no lol

cheers for all the advice so far guys, skoda does seem like it could be the one to go for at the moment. i did consider scooby but too much on insurance, plus i got the cossie for the 4wd fun! also thought about the mk4 astra gsi but not many about.
Think as people have said i will have to go and have a drive in a few of these cars and see what i think.

A Subaru isn't cheap to run and the chances are if it's standard, some derv's will pass it laughing. BMW 3.0's aren't cheap either. I've got a 3 series Cab auto and the mpg isn't great but then I never bought it for economy purposes
For the mileage you'll be doing, it makes sense to buy a petrol - seem too many horror stories with most dervs.. I've narrowed my search to include an Audi A4 3.2Q avant, although ideally I need an estate as I'll be driving to Majorca a couple of times a year. Not sure on the reliability/problems though. There's an 05 done 125k near me for £4.5k.
Volvo T5? - But like you say, Skoda's keep surfacing

Matt im sure if i did drive one i would like it.
As for the puma, i do 10 miles of b roads each way to work, and i dont hang about lol..
If i had a scoob id only see about 20 mpg lol
I, after something 4wd for some reason too, but i dont have any cash to worry about buying another car yet lol
