Why didn't the owner torque up all the brake calipers and roll bars etc?

Why would you half tighten everything

well there goes the old saying, if you want a job done properly do it yourself, thats a very shocking story but i think after the company doing the work on his car had mucked up a first time i would have stopped going there and would not even let them have a second chance at putting things right, they clearly are a bunch of monkeys but still dont understand why this person sourced to have his car done so far away to start off with and kept going back there throwing ridiculously high amounts of money at this company who was clearly ripping him off, surely theres more to this story or the bloke has more money then sense

Not the first time I've read very similar, and had the same experience of SE myself (prior to reading horror stories I might add).

I had an engine built by Ian @ SE for an XR3i many years ago, and that smoked like a fucker, and when I rang up I was told it would clear. Then it began losing oil, and was told that would stop, and just keep topping it up. A few hundred miles later I had it checked as I knew something wasn't right - turns out the back main oil seal had failed, and must have been fitted incorrectly when it was built. I took it back to Ian, demanding it was fixed, spent another whole day there, and was told it was fixed, yet was still charged (apparently at a heavily discounted rate). Like a mug I paid up - I just wanted my car back!

Shortly after it was down on power, smoking, and generally running like a bag of shite, and then eventually refused to start. Took it to another engine builder, they stripped it and checked it over, and was told the dizzy was fucked (which was a part supplied by SE), and the bores were awful - apparently the bores had been bored on size, rather than undersized and then honed to size, and because of that, they were rough as fuck and not perfect, and they cut the shit out of the piston rings, which were like razors, leading to bore washing from petrol and oil mixing.

The other company sorted it - had to wait a couple days for some oversized piston rings, since they wanted to hone the bores properly, but would need to oversize them because of the state of them, charged me half as much, and while it was there and waiting, they fettled with the cams a bit to give it a bit more lift. Once it was worked on, fully rebuilt, all new this and that, and it was run in, that engine was fucking awesome.

Ian is a fucking cock, a liar, and a cheat.

ps it was riverside works essex that done the mot , i would have went to vosa but was just letting all the different things go untill he told me to tap the starter , and then i noticed the paint damaged that put me over the edge ,

i only went back after the first time as he made it sound like he was doing the work for nothing but then he basically said i owed him 2 k to get the car back , after all the work the thought of 2 k was nothing to get the fucker finished

2k to do up a few nuts/bolts and put some fluids into the car? sorry but i consider that expensive, i could probably check every nut and bolt on my sierra with 2 hours on a ramp and tighten up any loose ones and adding fluids to gearbox brakes engine etc its not rocket science, well shouldnt be for a workshop/mot station whichever out of the 2 was doing that part of the job, still dont understand why you went to them in the first place? a recommendation or something? its not exactly a short trip down the road to you is it, and why not just send the engine back to them to be fixed insted of the whole car and just finish the car yourself when the engine is back? all in all you are a victim to these monekys and should indeed take them to court over it all but i think you have been a bit daft in the process of giving them chances to pull the wall over your eyes, even though i know you should be able to trust that the job would get done right being that its an established company

tbh im trying to work a day job start a business and renovate a house so it was just easier to send the whole lot to them , im not a mechanic by any means and as you said i reckond it would be easier to pay them a couple of hours to do it ,

im not really fused if anyone phones although the more that do the more pissed off he will get and hopefully just sort this shit out , and at worst its a good way of getting the truth about how bad a place they are its amazing how many folk have had bad dealings at thousands of pounds with this place the more folk that write things the more i can go to court with ,

theres a bit of method in this madness and a good fuckin laugh aswell lol

Gutting as the car looks stunning.
Although this may not be what you want to hear I would fuck the 3.0 l off as its not the greatest engine ever made and shove a nice 24v Scorpio motor in it,there's a lad in here who does the wiring for them and you should get the lot in and done for a grand.
Be more power and tuning potential than the 3.0 l as well as easy to replace.

for got to add i searched everywhere to find the best place and at the time he never really had much bad press when the dizzy failed i never checked up again i just went back and the 2 k included there second attempt at building the engine ,

it was between them and ricwood at the time i felt ian knew more about the essex but now i know who i would choose anyday of the week , best of all i spoke to ian about fitting trebble carbs to this and doing a 24valve transplant into my mk1 transit so although he has fucked me at least its not too late

feel for you mate. be careful with courts as no guarantee. usually only lawyers who gain. many years ago i had a supra and on start up knew something was wrong. called local garage and mechanic convinced a big end shell was turning although the car ran pretty well, except for a slight noise on acceleration. i went to work and he said he would return later to "recover" the car. a call 2 hours later from them to inform me the engine had siezed as they were driving it to the garage didn't go down very well. after 4 months, and about the cost of £2k, lost in court and payed another garage over £1.5k to fix. you have said you have driven the car many 100's of miles, the garage could say any damage was caused then. i hadn't even driven my car only started for about 2 mins after noticing noise and still lost out. i realy don't want to put a downer on the situation but you could end up losing a lot more. i realy hope you do not and wish you luck with this.

Do you really think that eBay add will help the court case?

You are deliberately setting out to damage his business, no matter how clever you think your being with the wording, his lawyers will rip you to shreds for it.

Edit to add, you should do one or the other, court case or fuck his business up, enevitably tryin to fuck the business might last a few weeks as the advert will have it's time, then it will be quickly forgotten about.

Only dealt with them once when they first got into using the tall blocks for 1.9 conversions, although all seamed well with the car I did a deal on another car with my mate by means of a swap but 2 weeks after he had it he had a nightmare with it, and this was only 6 weeks after the fresh engine install, I went back with my mate to SE and was basically told tough sh*t in a nutshell as I waved any warranty by selling the car

Ok then lol, your in no way suggesting people phone and annoy him Or spreading a rumour giving him no right to reply.

Just curious, you say your taking him to court, what does your legal representation think about your advert?

very strange situation, ive heard of an xr4x4 engine specialised built that was not fit for purpose and seem to remember a few xroc members jumped on the bandwagon with tales of woe.
if i remember correctly you need to write to him giving him the opportunity to rectify any faults at his expense before you go legal. a cleverly worded letter does the trick 9 times out of 10.
if not ask kosman to bum him.

Guys this has went on for near 6 weeks and i have a lot of emails the only thing he suggested was sending the engine to him on a pallet , when I asked how he planned on fixing paint alarm wheels to name a few he has never replyed for over two weeks ,

And chuck I couldn't give a fuck about what lawyers think , unfortunately that's the way the world is today , I don't have time for courts hence why I am giving potential buyers a chance to win a free law suit with this car ,

I went through similar with an alloy wheel manufacturer after a set of brand new wheels failed above 100 mph and basically decintegrated after only three or 4 days that took 3 years and so many lawyers it got scary but I won in the end

Se are shit, i went there in 2004 to have a new 1600 crossflow engine in my mk1 xr2 .within 24 hours i had the car back , running like a bitch , was told it would be £800 but the end bill was £1700.

2 weeks later it was still running like a pig, called the guy there . He asked me to take it back so i did, he then said it was my fault for not running it in . Id done 120 miles under 3k

I wouldnt go there again if the offered to do it for free . Class 1 wankers .
