Depends what you're buying a car for.

If you're only interested in technical ability and value for money, then probably not.

But, if you want something special, that seems to hold its value consistently, and has plenty of rally heritage, then it probably is worth it!

Depends what you want, when I got my first escos they were twice the price of a similar spec/condition saff, at present the saff value seems to have held a bit better than the escos.
Get a mk2 FRS Paul

Yeah i did/do fancy one but cant quite stretch to that at the minute, plus i have always wanted and escos since i was small so even if it was for 12 months whilst i wait for the mk2's to run out of warranty and drop in price as i still think the escos would be worth what i paid for it if kept nice etc in 12 months ?

Yeah i understand the technical ability, stage 3 is about as far as you should go with the stock 4x4 system?, as for the what do i want it for, i want it for short journeys of an evening in the nice weather say about 10 miles and for shopping weekends and of course the shows i can attend, ive had a good few saph cossies so sort of done the modding bit now just want something nice.

I hated my Escos after coming from 3 RWD Cossies Paul, just felt it needed 400+bhp to compare to a 350-370 rwd one obviously cus of transmission loses etc.

Drive one and see how you feel then...

What are they like as an everyday car? (compared to a Focus ST say)

Most out there seem to be modified, I would only want a standard one (lowered and different wheels allowed) in red, auralis or imperial blue.

An Escos is a shortened Sierra floor pan and running gear, yes.

I can't really see where your coming from though tbh, it's only the same as saying a Sierra Cosworth is just a Sierra underneath, you pay for the rareity, legacy, not to mention the Escos was the rarest model of the lot, hand built by Karmann Ghia.

Being you had Cosworths before you will appreciate just how rare a standard example is, but then seem as you want more power then you arn't looking for a standard one anyway.

The Focus ST will be a better everyday option, a Cosworth isn't a everyday car really, by that I mean the ST you can park without worrying if it will be there when you get back.

Depends if you speak to owners, sellers or buyers,as an owner yes worth the money,as said above are like a 500 and a bit special, but if i couldnt afford a good escort i would rather have a nice saff than a rough escort,if you want something to drive and enjoy buy something jap or a nice standard 2wd saff,if you speak to a seller they are to cheap just now,go ask the same question on www.escortrscosworth.com and see the reply
remember these cars have hand built shells by karmen in germany ,not some mass produced taxi shell lol

Hallo sean hows it going stranger, think the 4x4 is more usable, but down side is when you up the power, and are going to use it,you need deep pockets to up rate the gear box

You can't compare an ESCOS with an ST

One is a modern heavy 'performance' car

One is an old crock of shit rally weapon that will be fucked out of it's head unless you spend big money.

One will stand out like a sore thumb

One will pale into insignificance

One will be great fun, make you smile and make you cry.

One will be a bit 'meh'

As said for a technically amazing car not worth their money but for something pretty special, worth the premium.

As somone said above if you want a nice looking car to pose about in and are happy to keep it stage 3 then they do still get more looks than most and are nice to own for special days.
On the other hand if you want something that is fast and handels well there are far better cars out there for the cash, the problem being with the 4wd system you need 400 bhp to make it feel fast and then you need to spend ŁŁŁ on running gear and suspension to take it.
They do keep there money well but again if you start spending money on modding them it quickly becomes lost money.

If I was ever to own another one it would be a almost standard small turbo, that way you get the looks and there is less temptation to mod.

Well there is one ive been looking at on the escort forum, it is stage 3 and that is how i would keep it, im not looking for big turbos etc i done all that with the saph's, i just want something i can pose about in now and then, pick the mrs up from work in the summer time and take to a few shows like ford fair then keep it locked away for the winter months. But the only question im gonna ask is how slow is slow when you say they need 400bhp ?

Love mine. As said there are a lot more capable cars for the money though.

I bought mine because A. I have always wanted one, B I won't lose any money as far as resale is concerned. C to me it feels like I'm driving something special with real heritage. I'm more than happy with mine but I think they need to be at least stage 3 to make them feel "fast".

My friend drove a mint std Escos and when he got out he had to look under the throttle pedal to see if the mat had folded up under it......really slow in std trim compared to what most here are used to.
I would still have one at a drop of a hat if funds allowed.....I'm working on it, engine for the saph first

Paul, once you've had a 2wd with a bit of power mate going to a stage 3 4x4 is just a no go bud. My car has been off the road for 3 year now as you know and I drive and old Tdi Land Rover as a daily so you'd think stage 3 would feel mental. I get in Helens car and the first 5 minutes it feels nippy then after that whenever you put your foot down you're waiting for the monster kick up the arse and the squirming back end and it just never comes. Helens car is nice for posing about in but when you want a bit play, and you cant deny you will, you will instantly think its shit and go back to happy memories of 2wd and loads of boost.

I have many saffs and 3 doors running up to 350bhp and always wanted an escos and missed out on a few cheapies over the years as couldnt bring myself to part with the 3 door. My escos is bt and runs about 365 feels slow in comparrison to my rwd saffs. My first 4be and i have to say i absolutly love it and one of my fav rs so far. So useable in the wet great on track days and fast enough although not same sentation as the old rwd saffs.
As said above 2wd converted ones come up regular. (Dont like the wet though in 2wd format as to short and very twitchy)
Just feels so special driving it and so more modern compared to the old saffs.
I have said this will be my last Coswroth as i will move onto focus rs after this.

Depends what you want from one. A standard Escos is not the fastest thing in the world ( but hey speed isnt everything ). I think they are a nice car to drive, comfortable and handle very well. I think they have a bit of an iconic status.. Just take one for a drive and you will get plenty of looks. But you have to remember at the end of the day its a 20yr old car. Obviously newer cars will be far more advanced, quicker, handle better etc etc.

I went from an Escos to an Evo8 and the difference was like night and day.

I have said it once and ill say it again, comparing an Escos to newer cars is like comparing a PS1 to a PS3.

Personally I love Escos's.. There isnt an Rs which I would have over one.

Well to be honest by the sounds of it im gonna get bored very quickly with one, im sure the looks of it will be great to start off with but if they are as slow as you guys say im questioning whether the looks are worth 14k ? the the 20yr old cosworth syndrome of "whats that noise" " has the temp gauge gone up more than normal" "was that a smoke i see"

You can't compare an Escort to a Sapphire, as the Escort was designed as a rally car, so was one of the first cars to have spoilers that created negative lift at speed. Unfortunately, this same thing creates a considerable amount of drag above 100mph, so at these speeds in a straight line and even an equal powered Sapphire 4x4 will feel faster, let alone a 2wd which will feel just as fast with 50bhp less LOL.

However, show it some corners and the Escort comes into it's own. BUT to make it handle like a modern 4x4 equivalent (Evo / Scooby) takes a considerable amount of dedication and funds. It's a car designed from the early 90s, so allowances need to be made. As has been said, it's distinctive looks create a sense of occasion when-ever you drive it, but at the end of the day, it is a 20 year old Ford......

The good thing is that it is STILL considered Ford's halo car by many, and so residuals are still strong (look at other cars of the same age and check out the values of them ).

Gearboxes are the weak link, so stay Stage III is my advice and stick with Konis and you'll have a car that you can use on a regular basis.

You can turn it into a track weapon - but you have to LOVE these cars to do so, as it is eye-wateringly expensive (but when you overtake Mclaren MP4's, it makes it worth while ):
