Wheel Bearing Noise

Hi all.

Can anyone tell me what a worn wheel bearing sounds like?
If I'm traveling at a rolling speed, and I turn everything down, I can hear a faint grinding sound.

At first I thought it was the brakes, because the noise increased when I braked, and that was when I first heard it when I was just leaving the drive, I have new discs and pads as they need changing anyway, but just wondered if my bearings are wearing out too. I've tried jacking the car up and grabbing the wheel, but there is no play in the wheel at all.

Thanks, Jason

whining droning noise(sp?)
it'll get louder the faster you go,
usualy noise changing when cornering as the weight of the car moves on/off the dodgy bearing

No, it doesn't get louder, I can only hear it when I'm pretty much rolling slowly or Im braking and i've almost come to a stop.

When my brakes have warmed up (i think) If I brake hard from about 70 I do get a loud droning sound after 3 or 4 seconds which stops if I let go of the brake and then brake again.

could be brake or shaft related

Joshy 07-02-2012 05:45 PM

as above,

sounds like a large dog growling softly lol

Well I should be changing the disc's and pads tomorrow so that will rule the possibility of those out.

Check the brake disc sheilds arnt touching the disc's.when this happends it sounds like a
Light grinding noise.
Also check your tyres,if worn unevenly this can give a droning noise also

I had a rear wheel bearing go last year, sounded like a humming noise and as above it got louder the faster i went, id say till about 40mph you couldnt hear much, but then 50-60 you could hear it easily.

Funny thing is i didnt realise this until i changed the jap exhaust that my car had to a standard one, god knows how long the previous owner had been driving it with a shot wheel bearing

Wheel bearing test,

jack the car up one corer at a time/check one corner at a time on 2/4 post ramp

spin the wheel as fast as you can,

put your hand on the back of the hub, if you feel harshness/vibrating, not smooth the bearings fcked :D

Jasoncmor 07-02-2012 08:00 PM

Stupid question, but where is the disc sheild?

Cossie Sean 07-02-2012 08:09 PM

shit plate behind the brake disk, looking at brake disk, it will sit behind it.

Thanks for clearing that up and thanks everyone for your help, Ill let you know how it all goes after tomorrow.

From what I can tell, the bearings are fine. Cheers :)

The way I test of knackered bearing is play in the wheel, when the car jacked up / on axle stands try moving the rear wheels as if they could stear to side to side if they can then there is a wheel bearing problem, at the front try to pivot top and bottom instad of side to side if there is play you have a wheel bearing problem. Remember pressing out the bearings can be fun with out a press!
