Are all IB5 gearboxes...

...basically the same internally? I.e. can internals just be swapped around?

Also, are all Focus' cable shift?

Basically looking to build a box for a specific purpose, but on a budget. Thinking along the lines of...

Puma 1.7 gearset
Fiesta/FRP final drive
Focus casing (for cable shift)
CVH bell housing (for starter mounting position)

I'd like an LSD too. I've heard the S2 RST unit can be fitted to the Puma/Fiesta final drive with a bit of work, and is obviously a cheaper option than an FRP/Quaife item.

Obviously the mounts are all different, but that's just welding brackets and things on, so no drama. Just want to know if the actual box components are compatible really.

Just want to make sure it's possible to bolt it all together. I know it seems a bit of messing about, but there we are

isnt the cable shift box mtx

massivewangers 07-02-2012 02:21 PM

No, some IB5 Focus are definitely cable shift, just wondered if they all were.

Yes they all are bar 2L and sport models and maybe the derv (All have IB5 boxes and cables)(MTX75 for 2L and "Getrag" 6 speed for the ST170)

In fact I should think most if not all the IB5's are a cable setup?

Ive got an IB5 rear starter box in my track car, rod shiter, st150 gear kit and S2 LSD

massivewangers 07-02-2012 04:49 PM

Front mount starter is essential due to the engine being used, so it would need to be CVH or early Zetec bell housing I think.

Want to avoid the rod shift for a couple of reasons, so was thinking of using the 1.8 Focus casing, but wondered if I could use the 1.4/1.6 as well, as it gives me more options. Tried to look at a few on ebay but the pictures aren't ever so clear unfortunately.

But obviously don't want to buy a load of bits and then find they're not compatible!

i used the mk6 escort diesel box, can get them on ebay for £100ish reconditioned

massivewangers 07-02-2012 06:59 PM

I don't know if the diesel bell housing would suit. It might I suppose. Don't know if IB5 diesel boxes are ever so common. It's more whether a CVH/early Zetec bell housing would bolt up to a Focus box, whether they're all cable shift and whether the Puma internals will work.

the focus 1.6 gearbox is cable linkage

massivewangers 07-02-2012 07:13 PM

Ah ok, that clears that up. I wonder if the 1.6/1.8 casing is the same.

zippyobrien 07-02-2012 07:26 PM

1.6 has starter at top of bell housing same as zetec s.

You need, a 1.8 fiesta courier derv bell housing with a focus 1.6casing ( for cable shift)

S2 diff will fit as will puma gear set.

massivewangers 07-02-2012 07:57 PM

Why do I need the Fiesta housing? Would a CVH one not fit the box? Just want to keep my options open as much as possible for parts like that, as it keeps it easier to find and broadens my chances of finding bargain bits!

Puma is hydraulic setup, well certainly the 1.7 is

massivewangers 07-02-2012 10:44 PM

Yeah Puma is a hydraulic clutch. Something else I'm looking at, but that's another story!
