Default Pug 306 d turbo?or suggestions of good(ish) turbo derv under £800

I say ish as I expect a few probs at that price but I'm basically after a cheapish derv turbo as I've sold the transit and no longer have need for a van particularly.
It must be derv due to mileage/access to fuel and none of this failed pump/ injector crap like you get on Mondeo tdci's,hence something older.
I quite like the passats/Audi a4's but looking on the bay they seem to be fetching silly money, fuck all under a grand or 200000 miles really.
Mondeo 1.8td would be ok,but I'm sure there's better suggestions out there!!!

I think you have hit the nail on the head with the 306TD, wont find a better car for the money IMO, there fun to drive, go quite well, reliable and economical as fuck.

Sad as it sounds I've spotted a 406 turbo diesel for £800 on another forum, the car looks really decent and the buyer seems ok too.
Is there any shape to these?
It'll be used for long motorway runs so needs to be 100% reliable but comfort would be a big bonus, this ones got all the bits and bobs, leather etc,it's just I remember seeing hundreds of them broken down at the side of the motorway back when they were new,not sure what the issue was but there seems to be loads of them still soldiering on!!!

The non hdi pugs seem to be pretty bulletproof, although i had a 406 hdi estate on 200k last year, and it was fine.

Rover 420d/45d

Doesn't sound particularly appealing, but for what it is it's absolutely superb

Was going to suggest the same thing... fart about a little and you can extract a little more poke pretty easily too.

What about a rover 75 diesel? That's the one with a BMW engine.

Another option could be an Omega Saloon TD, should be able to get one for your money in Saloon form, the Estates are pretty desireable but usually cheap with moon miles or average miles and pricey.

No it's not.. IIRC it's actually a Honda engine (although I could be wrong!) but with some SDi injectors and a de-cat it can yield a lump of BHP and Torque from what I've read.

pug 406/306 or citroen 1.9 td with the bosch pump fitted are pretty much bullet proof and will average a easy 45mpg if used around town as well as long runs.

bought my citroen ZX td for £550 and its done two years of work so far and just needed a clutch and a wheel bearing. but now the rear beam bearings and front anti roll bar links are on the way out but as it passed its mot again i will just run it into the ground this year and get a 406 TD to replace it

I think it's going to be a 306 d turbo, been looking on gumtree and £800 gets me a decent one, their starting from £400 on there!!!
Cheap to insure as well so I'm told which may suit my boy turning 17 next year.

Time to Mot my 51 plate Nissan vanette and out that, don't think a 2.3d non turbos gonna float my boat really!!!

Although they did do a sr20det version in the serena,WOW!!!

There is a few on eBay with a buy it now around the £800 mark. I wouldn't mind a diesel estate myself tbh.

The bearings in mine went about 3 years ago.... I just put wheel spacers on the rear to stop the tyres touching the body LOL Had a S/H beam to fit since I first discovered it but CBA! as it keeps passing the MOT somehow!

Mines done 260k and all its had in the last 100k is a clutch and cambelt (Easy to do yourself imho) And it runs on veg 90% of the time

Just picked up an N plate 306TDS for £400 as the KA hit a lamp post a few weeks ago.

Got no complaints with it at all so far. Goes well, good on the diesel, 155k on the clock and the only thing that needs fixing is 2 roll bar link arms electric windows/sunroof, big boot, plenty of cabin space!

Never been big on french cars but as it stands i am eating humble pie

rofl mines no where near as bad to start the wheels leaning in yet just a annoying rattle but the state of the roads its no big surprise
i looked at changing the bearings but it looks a horrible job and a new beam is £350
i had a 406 petrol before and it was a great car only ever had one problem a £20 map sensor not bad for 3 1/2 years and 40k miles
the biggest problem is finding clean looked after examples though so many rough dogs out there

If its a constant banging noise when you on bumpy roads its more than likely these

Rear beam bearings are fairly easy, can be done in a day no problem.

I bought a 2001 306 HDi last year as I do over 50 mile a day and I have had no problems with it...apart from the battery dying on me one morning.

Great on diesel 55 to 58 mpg, over 600 miles to a tank is possible.

For me it would be 406 simply because I had a 92 405 non turbo years ago.Mega miles on it but mint on fuel and very comfy, plus I like bigger cars.I thought the old derv Rovers were a pug power plant in them

Same principle mate not sure if there identical, if it sounds like you have a loose shock then its 99% going to be these. If you jack the rear up (not on the axel) then put a crow bar under the wheel and wiggle it up and down you should hear the knock, try both sides.

Heres the zx ones

Agreed, clanking is usually just the mounts!
