Depends on so many things.

Road conditions, tyres, power output and if the LSD in the diff is working ok.

2 w/d's are less forgiving than the 4x4's BUT they( 4x4's) can also bite you in the bum if pushed tooooo far

2wd is cheaper to get big power as over 400bhp in 4x4 will keep killing boxes till u spend big money on a good box

any saff/sierra cossie 2wd with the same power as a saff cossie 4b4 will be quicker because of transmission losses

So what about from a standing start? Round the bends? Anything below 4th gear?

You don't have to racing to drive fast And in a 4wd car you can go quick in the wet thats the point (which is 50% of the time here in the uk).

Saying a equivalent powered 2wd is faster than a 4wd in a untrue statement imo.

Anyway I'm not getting into a 4wd/Rwd arguement cos I don't have either

dude why are touring cars/f1 cars rear wheel drive........is that because they are slower top speed than a 4 wheel drive or can corner slower??????????????

standing start a 4b4 will piss a 2wd....but once there rolling on tarmac....2wd all the way

Touring cars/F1 cars are RWD because they race on smooth, flat race tracks Comparing a race car to a road car is pointless. A rally car would beat a touring car (of a similar spec) round a wet track.

Sapphire Cosworths are driven on bumpy, broken/multi surfaced, multi-grease/oil/dirt covered roads which are also wet half the time.

Yes the 2wd is quicker above 2nd gear in the dry...but the 4wd is quicker below 4th gear in the wet.

Either way

"any saff/sierra cossie 2wd with the same power as a saff cossie 4b4 will be quicker because of transmission losses"

ISN'T CORRECT

I rest my case

it is purely down to driving style. i have had mine snaking all over the road in 2nd gear in the dry. But i have also managed to have 90% traction from a standing start in the dry. If you want it out its easy, if you want it in a straight line its difficult whilst driving hard imo. I find that tight bends in the wet driving extra slow is the scariest as you think your safe cause your driving slow, but can catch you out without warning. O and you need to concentrate 100% and dont think you have got it sussed and get cocky cause you will end up in a ditch

bit of selective posting there buddy........i said for top speed i.e 180mph+ in a straight line wet or dry a 2wd will beat a 4wd ...........so therefore

IS CORRECT

PS why do you think the rs200 had a 2wd feature...was it not for the rally boys when they got on tarmac then??????????

RWD aint as bad as people think... lol

drive the car normally and you wont even realise its RWD.

dump the clutch in 2nd on full boost round a 90degree bend in the snow and thats a different matter

imho if youre looking at <300bhp then as far as straight line dry stuff goes you really wont go THAT much quicker in a 4x4... 2wds do still grip very very well

mine's only about 200bhp... but if driven/launched sensibly i can still get a blinding start. and my old XR4i (150bhp) never had any traction issues whatsoever!

Regulations

RWD is safe , 4x4 is safe, fwd is safe, only being a twat makes any of them dangerous....
...and 4wd are less predictable if the limit is breached also, imo ....
