hi i own a escort cossie it was garaged for the last 3yrs and the fuel gauge didnt work and my biggest problem is that when i open the right door the fuel lamp switched on the dashboard

Sounds like either a bad common earthing point or the connector onto the warning panels a bit dodgy?

As said somehow the earth for the fuel light has come into contact with the door switch or the panel.

Could be the common fusebox fault?

I can't see it personally else it would be illuminated permantly, the fact it only happens when the door is open shows the earth to be at fault.

The interior light is having a hard time returning current back to earth (bad connection in other words) and is backfeeding via the fuel light to get back to earth. The dash and interior light will therefore surely share the same earth point that needs to be cleaned up and sorted.
Easier said than done like but the haynes bible might well help you locate it.
