Whats the crack??
hi guys, got a bit of a mystery problem (well a mystery to me anyway), and wondered if anyone could shed any light on it.i bought a totally standard single owned 3door 97GTi last October and it has been an absolute gem of a car so far.then 3weeks ago my Clutch pedal ratchet went, luckily only a couple miles from my Garage of choice,so i got a tow and had it done a few days later. now ive had this problem before on my previous GTi,not a big thing as you know and cheap enough to sort, only this time once i picked it up i noticed that the was a noise when going into second, not loud or harsh but a tiny little grind, and more importantly a noise that wasn't there before!! now this noise doesn't happen when the car is stationary or moving very slowly, only when over 5 or 6 mph, there is no over rev or clutch slip, reverse and other forward gears are still crisp and no problems whatsoever, and clutch was replaced 3weeks before i purchased it, ( along with Cambelt/Waterpump/exhaust/plugs) so still feels spot on. have got into the mindset of not using second anymore, which is a shame as 2nd--3rd is probably the nicest change to get what ooompf you can out of it, shame Ford only gave it 113.something BHP, though for a dad on a budget, just looking like an RS is enough for now lol, and 35+mpg helps!!
Anyways, im not sure what it is or why its happened,so was wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue, or if anyone with the knowhow could point the finger at a few possible causes before i go to the garage again, would be of great help as i would very much like my second gear back lol. thanks, Lee

Sounds like it could be a little clutch drag, the clutch pawl is self adjusting, but if you grip the clutch pedal and pull up, it will release the tension, do this then press a few more times, it will click as it takes up the slack in the cable, may just be a sticky adjuster as it's new, worth a try, but worth checking the gearbox oil also.
