Default Doing 60 mph and bonnet catch popped open

Hi peeps
took car out for it's first long trip lastnight.
Was doing 60 mph on dual carraigeway and suddenly my bonnet popped open.
Luckily it sat on the safety catch till I could pull over.
Slammed it shut and gave it a good yank to make sure it was shut.
Carried on , hit s bump at 30 mph and it popped again.
Had to tie it down to get home.

Catch isn't adjusted well as I have to slam it for it to lock.

I googles the problem and turns out a few peeps have had this.
I'm gonna adjust it but I'm so paranoid now that I'm tempted to fit pins.
But I don't really like em.
Anyone else had this prob ?

What car? I had this on my S2, ended with the bonnet wrapped round the windscreen and a buggery scuttle panel and roof. :-(

i run pins in mine now, quite like the look of them actually but if you dont, i believe Jano at Oddkidd has some kind of strap set up for this problem.

Just get a new catch and make sure its properly adjusted. Remember your current catch is probably very old so a new one should solve the problem.

It's a common problem with them, the Clio mentioned had a recall for the same thing and you were banned from taking your test in one without proof the recall had been done!

Bonnet came flying up on 2 guys i know that had escort turbos.

When i had my escort turbo i tied a strap under the bonnet and when i shut the bonnet reached down from underneath the front bumper and tied it to something down there.

Bit of a pain but didnt want bonnet pins and definetely didnt want my bonnet flying up.

paranoid about this happening to me on my mk3 as it pops open after hitpoles n speed humps. i saw a cable with a loop either end that was supposedly for mk3s..connects to lifting eye and bonnet catch iirc.gonna have a look again, and would think they would fit mk4s aswell if they are any good

my mate had a uno turbo years back and it was fitted with something like the pic below connected to the slam panel with a nut and bolt and small lenth bit of chain hook it to the bonnet, make sure to leave it long enough for you to get your hand in to undo it when needed

ive adjusted the catch tonight and it sems to be locking better, but can i ever trust it?
judging by some of your storys i say no.
i tried to make some kinda safety strap for it but the dog lead i was using wouldnt let me shut the bonnet lol
gonna maybe use some kinda flat strap to make a safety device.

When i was bring my cossie home, i was in the focus and my dad was in the cossie overtaking me and i saw the bonnet going mad up and down (sprung open a little)

I always thought should i do something about it before i take it out but never knew what.

Good read!

anyone made a safety strap or something?any pics?
ive been trying to make something by threading between the 2 skins at the front but then i struggle to shut bonnet again cos strap hits front panel.
i want to strap bonnet catch area to engine hoist point on engine so if it lifts it will only lift about a foot.

when you look at the catch in the slam panel

look to the right where the loop is cut out of the slam panel, i bet the catch has been bent down there, this is the part for 2nd release, so if the 1st release does fail this is supose to catch it, but as most are bent down it doesnt, just get a bar and push itback up into the slam panel until its traight again, and i bet the bonnet is easier close aswell

I have been using these to save bonnets for a while now. Well worth it and will not require hacking your bonnet up to fit silly pins or catches.
