Default other than head gasket failure is there...

...any other way for water to get into the oil and oil into the water on a engine?

Dont think so unless you pour water where the oil should go

crack the block between ya oil and water ways ( happens alot woth over tightning head bolts or water in the thread hole causeing hydrolic presure

cracks in the block /head if turbo'd water and oil cores!

water does go in the engine doesnt it and oil in the radiator??

water actually does go into the engine actually but not directly

Oh and btw using the same bucket/can for both water and oil could cause cross contamination

Of course you can but you will have to reuse the oil 1st as it will be on top of the water
